The Reverend Garth Lee Hill, Sr.

Retired, served in North and South Carolina Synods 

 

 

The Reverend Garth Lee Hill, Sr., retired, passed away on February 22, 2013. Rev. Hill was born in Salisbury, NC on April 25, 1924, the son of Charles Lee and Daisy Hill. He graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College in 1945, where he was student body president. He graduated from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC in 1947. It was during his time at the Seminary that he met Patricia Steadman Hill, his wife of 65 years, who was a student at Columbia College. 


He served St. James Lutheran Church in Newton, NC; Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Little Mountain, SC and Zion Lutheran Church in Lexington, SC. After his retirement he was interim pastor at Enon Lutheran Church in Leesville, SC. 


Rev. Hill is survived by his wife Patricia Steadman Hill and his children, Lee Hill (Carla), Lesley Ruff, Richard Hill (Denise), Karen Hill, Dr. Mary Patricia Hill (Joe) and Michael David Hill. Rev. Hill is also survived by 7 grandchildren; Candi, Andrea, Tricia, Shell, Michelle, Tre' and Lily and 3 great grandchildren; Riley, Molly and Kaylee. He is also survived by his sister "Beezie" Hatch of Colorado and his brother J.C. Hill of North Carolina. 


Pastor Hill was a Boy Scout Master for 30 years and organized three Boy Scout troops that remain active today. He received the Silver Beaver Award and the Order of the Arrow. He served as secretary of the Board of Trustees of Newberry College. Pastor Hill was instrumental in organizing the Little Mountain Fire Department and acted as a volunteer fireman until he moved to Lexington. He was director of the Adult Senior Camp at Lutheridge in Arden, NC for 10 years, and was instrumental in organizing the Chaplaincy Program at the current Lexington Medical Center. 


Pastor Hill was very active in the Gilbert community, where he established the Senior Center in Gilbert and served as its Director for two years. He assisted in organizing the Meals On Wheels program in the Gilbert area. He and his wife Patricia continued to deliver meals until just two years prior to his death. He was instrumental in the planning and the clearing of the property for the Gilbert Community Park, which hosts the SC Peach Festival each July 4th. He was a long time member of the Lions Club and was still active in the Gilbert Ruritan Club. In addition, Pastor Hill was Chaplain for the Soil Conservation District for 8 years, having a passion for conservation and environmental concerns. 


Visitation will be at Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, 256 Main Street , Batesburg-Leesville, SC on Saturday, February 23, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

 

Rev. Hill's celebration of life will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 401 Main St. Gilbert, SC, on 3:00 p.m., Sunday, February 24.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of choice or to Grace Lutheran Church, 401 Main St., Gilbert, SC 29054.
