Boozman, Cochran to Receive
Honorary Degrees at Commencement

U.S. Senator John Boozman, OD '77, and SCO President Emeritus Billy Cochran, OD '68, will receive honorary degrees at SCO's commencement ceremony to be held on Friday, May 6 in Memphis. Senator Boozman, the only optometrist serving in the U.S. Senate, was originally scheduled to participate two years ago but underwent life-saving heart surgery a few days prior to commencement. The Senator will also deliver the commencement address. Dr. Cochran, who served as SCO President from 1984-2007, will receive the Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degree in recognition of his service and support of the profession. He was inducted into the National Optometry Hall of Fame in 2012. SCO's Class of 2016 includes 130 graduates. Read more about this year's schedule and other details on SCO's Commencement page.

SCO to Host Presidential Inauguration

Reich to be Installed as SCO's Seventh President
SCO President Lewis Reich, OD, PhD, will be formally inaugurated as the college's seventh president at an investiture ceremony to be held on campus on Friday, May 13. Inaugural events also include a reception the evening prior to the ceremony and a luncheon following the conclusion of the inaugural ceremony. Alumni and friends wishing to extend greetings or messages of congratulations to Dr. Reich may do so via SCO's inauguration pages on the SCO website.

Nearly 250 Alumni Participate on Campus
SCO extends its appreciation to the nearly 250 alumni and friends who recently attended Spring Continuing Education Weekend on campus. The college offered a full weekend program, including several workshops and a financial strategies session presented by the Hayes Center for Practice Excellence. The lecturers included several faculty members: Lindsay Elkins, OD '07, Scott Ensor, OD '01, Jennifer Sanderson, OD, Michael Dorkowski, OD '04, Karen Squier, Paul Harris, and Lisa Rossmeyer Wade, OD '84. On a related note, alumni and friends are invited to SCO's annual Residents' Weekend to be held June 10-11 on campus. Presentations by SCO's 2015-16 residents will include 12 COPE credit hours (*COPE approval pending). Look for email invitations in the coming weeks with details.

News about SCO's Alumni and Faculty
Alumni are encouraged to submit nominations for the college's 21st annual Lifetime Achievement and Young Alumni Awards. Any SCO graduate may nominate fellow alumni by using nomination forms available on SCO's website. Completed forms may also be mailed, emailed or faxed. Nominations must be received by June 30, 2016. The awards will be presented during Fall Homecoming and CE weekend. Contact the Office of Institutional Advancement at (901) 722-3216 for additional information or questions.
SCO's Class of 2016 is raising funds to support a scholarship in memory of Craig Baxter, their classmate who passed away earlier this year. Alumni wishing to support this scholarship may contribute online.

- The college also notes the passing of Dr. Larry Alexander, a longtime supporter of SCO who served on the faculty of UAB and was later active in Kentucky optometry. He served as a consultant to ARBO and COPE and had also served as clinical editor for the Optometry and Vision Science Journal. An endowed award at SCO is named for him.
Faculty Updates
Lindsay Elkins, OD '07, pictured, has been appointed as SCO's new Director of Academic Programs. Dr. Elkins will be responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective implementation of the college's academic programs, with emphasis on the didactic and laboratory components of SCO's curriculum.
Rachel Grant, OD, wrote about spotting signs of the Zika virus for Optometry Times.
Paul Harris, OD, pictured, received the G.N. Getman Award at the COVD meeting in St. Louis last weekend. Marie Bodack, OD, was among the faculty lecturers at the event, with several posters presented by residents and faculty members, including Melissa Zarn, OD, Patricia Cisarik, OD, PhD, Mary Bartuccio, OD, Marc Taub, OD, Alicia Groce, OD, and Dr. Harris. Whitney Hauser, OD '01, lectured at the Vision Expo East event in New York and at the Optometric, Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgery meeting in San Diego.
Glen Steele, OD '69, is leading a program on campus this week to promote InfantSEE. Entertainer Tom Sullivan and others will join Dr. Steele for a Thursday morning panel discussion designed to provide Memphis area healthcare providers and educators with information about the benefits of the InfantSEE program.
Daniel Taylor, OD '06, recently was honored for his academic poster tying for first place among graduate students in the Education section at the 2016 University of Memphis Student Research Forum.
Greg Wolfe, OD, MPH, is helping call awareness to May being named Healthy Vision Month by the National Eye Institute. The NEI is coordinating activities to educate Americans about eye health.
