Reich Named SCO President by BOT
|
SCO's Board of Trustees has selected Lewis Reich, OD, PhD, to serve as the college's seventh president. Prior to being named Interim President last March, he served as Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Reich joined SCO's faculty in 2008 following nearly a decade of service at Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry, where he served as Associate Professor and as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. A 1988 graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, he completed a residency in low vision rehabilitation at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and later joined the faculty. He received his PhD from the University of Houston in 1999. Dr. Reich and his wife, Diane, reside in Memphis with their son, Isaac. His inauguration is being planned for May 2016. Campbell Appointment Announced

New Vice President for Academic Affairs Selected
J. Bart Campbell, OD '87, Professor, has been appointed Vice President for Academic Affairs after serving as Interim Vice President since last spring. The announcement was made by SCO President Lewis Reich, OD, PhD. Following his graduation from SCO, Dr. Campbell completed his Contact Lens Residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry. Since joining SCO's faculty in 1988, he has served in several leadership capacities, including as Chair of the Department of Optometric Education. He currently is Chair of the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education and has served on numerous committees at the national level, several of them related to accreditation.

New Board Members Appointed

Brewer-Lord, Wroten, and Otten Join Board
SCO welcomes two members to its Board of Trustees and a third as the college's Alumni Council representative. Joining are Amanda Brewer-Lord, OD '97, and Chris Wroten, OD '02, who previously served as the Board's Alumni Council Representative. The new Alumni Council representative is Larry Otten, OD '77, not pictured. Dr. Brewer-Lord practices in Virginia with her husband, Stephen Lord, OD '89. Dr. Wroten is a partner in the Bond-Wroten Eye Clinics with three offices in Louisiana. He is married to Sarah Wroten, OD '03. Dr. Otten recently retired from his practice in the Seattle, Washington area to devote time to traveling abroad performing optometry-related mission work.

News about SCO's Alumni and Faculty
SCO is appreciative to so many of the college's alumni and friends who have reached out by sending messages of condolences and support following the recent untimely passing of Craig Baxter, '16, pictured. Several alumni helped cover traveling expenses for several of Craig's classmates who joined President Reich in attending funeral services in Nebraska. A memorial video tribute was created online.
Alumni and friends are encouraged to check out SCO's newly launched Online CE Course Library. SCO has created a portal on the World Continuing Education Alliance's website to help expand the global CE reach of SCO's new program. Ten courses filmed in high definition feature SCO faculty members sharing their expertise.
In other CE news, registration has opened for SCO's annual Spring CE program. Scheduled for April 8-10 on the SCO campus, this year's program features a number of topics requested by alumni. Speakers include several SCO faculty members, alumni and other noted lecturers, including Leo Semes, OD. SCO also looks forward to seeing alumni and friends at this weekend's third annual Mardi Gras CE Weekend in New Orleans.
Alumni and friends should mark their calendars and make plans to visit SCO representatives at SECO on February 24-28 in Atlanta. SCO's booth this year will expand to include Alumni Affairs, The Hayes Center for Practice Excellence, and representatives of Student Services. SCO's annual reception for alumni and friends will be held Friday evening at the Omni's atrium overlooking CNN Center.
SCO's Office of Institutional Advancement has launched a new Planned Giving page. The site has useful information about a number of options that alumni may use to support SCO through planned giving. And if you're an Amazon or Kroger customer, you can support your alma mater by choosing SCO as an Amazon Smile recipient or designating SCO as your organization of choice to support through Kroger's Community Rewards program.

Glen Goldring, OD '78, recently welcomed his first grandchild, Emmerson Sloane Katz, pictured, who was born December 25.
Kendall Krug, OD '85, recently received the Envision Visionary Award in recognition of his work with vision rehabilitation. Based in Wichita, Envision is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for the blind and visually impaired. Dr. Krug is in private practice in Hays, Kansas. Gregory S. Moore, OD '87, has been named senior clinical instructor of optometry at the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Optometry. Read more in this story.
