Homecoming and Fall CE One Month Away
 
SCO's Homecoming and Fall CE Weekend is just a month away, so register now to join us September 24-27, 2015 in Memphis. Alumni events include the return of the all campus barbecue at 5 pm Friday on campus following SCO's Convocation and White Coat ceremony, Saturday evening's alumni dinner and after party, and a new donor reception recognizing SCO's supporters. Reunions will also be held for classes with graduation dates ending in '0' or '5,' with the Class of 1965 celebrating its 50th reunion. Attendees can receive 19 hours of CE credit, eight of which are CEE hours, on campus; speakers include reunion class member Tammy Pifer Than, OD '95. Johnson to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

SCO Board of Trustees member Jarrett Johnson, OD '90, MPH - pictured with Board Chair Steven Reed, OD '95 - has been selected to receive SCO's 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award. Presented during Homecoming, SCO's highest award bestowed on alumni recognizes significant contributions to the profession of optometry. A former SCO Board chair, Dr. Johnson is a Past President of the New Orleans Optometric Society. She has served in numerous public service roles throughout the New Orleans area, where she's celebrating 25 years of practice. Dr. Johnson also co-chaired SCO's "Envision Our Progress" campaign with James Sandefur, OD '65. Learn more about Dr. Johnson's career accomplishments in this news release about her upcoming award. 


SCO to Welcome Class of 2019
Orientation to be Held for 135 Students

SCO will welcome 135 new students to campus later this week for the start of their Orientation process and the beginning of the Fall Semester. This year's class was selected from 873 applicants. Their GPA is 3.54 and average OAT scores were 329. This year's class comes to SCO from 31 states and represents the most females ever in a class, 98, or 73%. The students' ages range from 21-38, with 14% minority representation. SCO's entire student population stands at 529 students, with a 61/39% female/male ratio, 16% minority, and 41 states and Canada represented.

The Hayes Center for Practice Excellence is seeking nominations for its third annual Practice of Excellence Awards. The award recognizes successful practices and achievements made by SCO graduates, and fosters joint relationships that benefit both the alumni and current optometry students. The $5,000 award is divided into three sections based on the number of years of practice. Learn more about the criteria and other information here.

A recent edition of the (Memphis) Commercial Appeal's Sunday business section featured a story about SCO's successes and an interview with Interim President Lewis Reich, OD, PhD. Read more here. Action News Five, the NBC Memphis affiliate, also featured a related positive story on a new economic impact study that highlighted financial data both for SCO in the community and the earning potential of the college's graduates. SCO is also participating in an effort to rebrand the Memphis Medical District, featured in this news story.

Wayne Cannon, OD '62,
was named the South Carolina's Optometric Physician Association's Optometrist of the Year, the fourth time he's received the award. He's pictured with SCO Interim President Lewis Reich, OD, PhD.

Keith Schrunk, OD '03, and his wife, Angie, recently adopted their second child, Korey Allan. He was also recently elected to the Board of Trustees for the Iowa Optometric Association and serves on his local hospital Board of Trustees. Dr. Schrunk also serves as SCO's Alumni Liaison for Iowa. 

Jared Cooper, OD '09, authored this recently published article for parents to help differentiate between learning problems and vision-related issues.

Esla Subashi Speth, OD '10, welcomed a son, Kelan Lee Speth, on July 21. He weighed 8 lbs., 8 ozs., and was 21 inches long, pictured.

Nicole Kosciuk, OD '11, married Andrew Brauer, OD '12, in Arlington Heights, Illinois on June 6, 2015.

Jennifer Lyerly, OD '11, was recently profiled by Women in Optometry as one of the magazine's innovators in its Influential Women series.

Chris Fisher, OD '13, was seriously injured in a car accident last week and faces a long recuperation, so please keep him and his family in your thoughts or prayers.

Faculty and SCO Updates


Chris Borgman, OD,
has been named Young Alumnus of the Year by his alma mater, Illinois College of Optometry.

Several faculty members participated at the recent World Congress of Optometry meeting in Colombia, including Marc Taub, OD, Glen Steele, OD '69, Whitney Hauser, OD '01, and Paul Harris, OD, pictured with AOSA President Hunter Chapman, '16.

Two new faculty members recently joined SCO. Alicia Groce, OD, is an instructor who recently completed her residency in Pediatrics and Binocular Vision at Nova Southeastern University, where she also received her OD degree. Kristina Haworth, OD, MS, PhD, is an Assistant Professor who previously served at The Ohio State University College of Optometry, where she earned both a masters degree and PhD in Vision Science. She earned her OD degree from SCCO. Prior to her academic career, Dr. Haworth was part of an interdisciplinary ophthalmology and optometry practice for seven years before opening her own solo private practice.

William Edmondson, MAT, OD, recently received the AOA's continuing Optometric Recognition Award.

Faculty members Jeung Kim, OD, Marlon Utech, OD '78, Freddy Chang, OD, and John Sharpe, OD '83, pictured, joined two colleagues from the University of the Incarnate Word's Rosenberg School of Optometry in authoring a new Lange Q&A Optometry Review book. Published by McGraw Hill, the book includes 2,000 Q&A detailed explanations and references covering core areas of the basic and clinical science curriculum.

Dan Fuller, OD, was featured writing about patient case studies in two different issues of Contact Lens today, the first linked here and the second one here.

Paul Harris, OD, recently attended the Colorado Vision Summit in Denver.

Glen Steele, OD '69, was interviewed by by the CBS-TV affiliate in Memphis for a segment about access to care, including pediatric vision issues.

Marc Taub, OD, MS, authored this Optometry Times article about VT tools for practices.
