Southern College of Optometry was well-represented at last month's annual AOA meeting in Seattle. SCO appreciates all the alumni and friends who visited SCO's booth or attended the college's Friday evening reception. Pictured are three 2009 classmates who participated at the President's Council meeting: Jerrod Davies, OD '09, Utah's President-elect, T.J. Smith, OD '09, President-elect in Delaware, and Matt Jones, OD '09, Arkansas Vice President. Other highlights included the end of a great year of service by alumnus David Cockrell, OD '81, as AOA President, SCO Professor Glen Steele, OD '69, helping lead the celebration of the InfantSEE program's 10-year anniversary, and SCO Board of Trustees member Dave Sattler receiving the inaugural Ophthalmic Industry Leader Award from ASCO. SCO Honored at NOA Meeting
College Named NOA Chapter of the Year 

SCO was honored at this year's National Optometric Association's 47th annual summer meeting when the student NOSA chapter received the NOA's Chapter of the Year Award. SCO faculty member Janette Dumas, OD, was recognized as the NOA's Doctor of the Year, while Brittany Tounsel, OD '15, received the Student of the Year Award. Kirsten McKnight, '16, was inaugurated as NOSA's national president for 2015-16, marking the second year in a row that an SCO student has led the organization. Make Plans for SCO's Homecoming & CE Fall Weekend
Registration Now Open

Registration is now open for SCO's annual Homecoming and Fall CE Weekend, to be held September 24-27, 2015 in Memphis. A brochure was recently mailed with details about events, speakers and other activities. This year's event will honor the Class of 1965 as members celebrate their 50th reunion. Other reunion classes with graduation dates ending in '0' or '5' will also celebrate reunions. Alumni events include a Thursday evening kick-off party, Convocation, all-campus barbecue, alumni dinner and an after party. The Hayes Center for Practice Excellence is seeking nominations for its third annual Practice of Excellence Awards. The award recognizes successful practices and achievements made by SCO graduates, and fosters joint relationships that benefit both the alumni and current optometry students.The $5,000 award is divided into three sections based on the number of years of practice. Pictured are this year's recipients, Joe Sugg, OD '09, Randall Glass, OD '06, and James Hertzog, OD '06. Learn more about the criteria and other information here.

Jack Runninger, OD '47, recently retired from writing columns for Optometric Management for more than 40 years. Read more in this story.

Robert Smalling, OD '74,
former SCO Board member, has been reappointed to the State Board of Optometry in Arkansas for a term through 2020.

Lloyd Tantum, OD '78,
and his son, William Tantum, OD '14, are opening their new practice facility, Blount County Eye Center, pictured, in Maryville, Tennessee, with the addition of Susan Evans, OD '14, also pictured, to the East Tennessee practice.

Chuck Nassauer, OD '82, has announced his candidacy for the Louisiana House of Representatives. He currently serves as a Washington Parish Councilman. Read more in this story.

Mark Moore, OD '89, and his family, pictured, recently visited the SCO campus on a trip through Memphis. SCO welcomes alumni visits and tours of the campus, so if you're planning to visit, we'd love to see you!

Tammy Than, OD '95, was named the AOA's Optometric Educator of the Year.

Ryan Halpern, OD '07, was interviewed for this newspaper story about the newest practice owned by him and his father, Joel Halpern, OD '74, in Delaware.

Courtney Dryer, OD '11, was profiled in this Women in Optometry article about the success of her practice in North Carolina.

Heather Atcherson, OD '15, Jessica Haynes,
and Barbie Jodoin, OD '15, are among this year's Memphis area residents, and Lisa Stuart, OD '15, is one of the on-campus residents in The Eye Center for the 2015-16 program.

Michael Lam, OD '15, married Connie Kim over the July 4th holiday. The wedding was attended by several of Dr. Lam's 2015 classmates, pictured.  


Faculty and SCO Updates


Several faculty promotions were announced effective July 1. Promoted to assistant professor from instructor were Esla Speth, OD '10 and Melissa Zarn, OD. Promoted to associate professor from assistant professor were Patricia Estes-Walker, OD, Jared Powelson, OD '96, Jennifer Sanderson, OD, and James Venable, OD '89. Promoted from associate professor to professor was John Mark Jackson, OD '99.

In addition to Dr. Glen Steele's InfantSEE anniversary participation at the AOA, pictured, other faculty participation included poster presentations by Drs. Patricia Cisarik, Jeung Kim, Jennifer Jones, Beth Sparrow, Aaron Kerr, Paul Harris, Reena Lepine, Joanne Smith, Bill Edmondson, and Chris Lievens and Drs. Christina Grosshans, Jenna O'Brien and Lekha Samuel from the residents. Dr. Chris Lievens also lectured at two seminars, and Dr. Kristin Anderson participated in an AOSA panel discussion.

Patricia Cisarik, OD, PhD, authored an article about customizing blue light protection for patients in this month's issue of Primary Care Optometry News.

Paul Harris, OD,
was among the participants as SCO welcomed attendees to the 21st annual Conference on Clinical Vision Care to campus earlier this month. Dr. Harris also recently spent two days in Woods Hole, Massachusetts at the J. Erik Jonsson Center, part of the National Academy of Science. The meeting was called the Initiative for Innovation in Vision Science. The goal of the 30 attendees was to come up with innovative ways to approach amblyopia treatment. In his presentation, Dr. Harris emphasized the role that vision therapy and perceptual learning play without the need for opaque patching, as well as the success of VT compared to other patching forms.

Glen Steele, OD '69, was interviewed by a number of news outlets related to the viral social media video showing an infant's reaction to seeing her parents clearly thanks to her glasses prescribed following an InfantSEE examination. Dr. Steele's role as AOA's InfantSEE Committee Chair was noted in an interview by the NBC-TV affiliate in Memphis.

Marc Taub, OD, MS, was quoted in a recent Optometry Times article about a new device that assists ALS patients in communicating via their eyes and a computer.
