Join SCO Next Week in Seattle
 
Southern College of Optometry invites alumni and friends to the college's annual reception set for Friday, June 26 at the American Optometric Association's annual meeting in Seattle. SCO's reception will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday evening in the Sheraton Seattle's Willow B room. SCO's booth, #2404, will be open Thursday-Saturday in the Exhibit Hall. SCO's student contestant this year competing in the Varilux Student Bowl is Ben Roach, '17. Make plans to interact with SCO in Seattle!          

SCO Recognizes Residents
44 Residents Honored

SCO recently recognized its residents at the college's annual Residents' Weekend. Residents in the nation's largest optometry residency program participated by presenting COPE-approved lectures attended by several alumni and regional ODs over the weekend. Each resident was also recognized in a ceremony and with a reception. The residents also gathered for a group photo, pictured, which included at least a dozen SCO alumni. Dr. Cheryl Ervin, SCO's Director of Residency Programs, noted that SCO's residency number will grow to 50 in next year's program.


SCO Homecoming & CE Fall Weekend Dates Set
Registration to Open Soon

SCO will host its Homecoming and Fall CE Weekend on September 24-27, 2015 in Memphis. Registration will open soon, so watch for email and other updates with more information, including greater details about CE speakers and details. This year's event will honor the Class of 1965 as members celebrate their 50th reunion. Other reunion classes with graduation dates ending in '0' or '5' will also celebrate reunions. Alumni events include a Thursday evening kick-off party, Convocation, all-campus barbecue, alumni dinner and an after party. Visit SCO's Homecoming & Fall CE weekend page for more details.

Thomas A. Roberson, OD '77, recently returned to Haiti for his fourth mission trip. The group's eye clinic screened approximately 1,400 patients, issued 1,200 pairs of glasses, provided surgery for 82 visually challenged patients with cataracts and pterygiums, as well as treatment for 30 patients with glaucoma.

Luanne Cox, OD '80,
recently shared this nice sentiment as her Facebook status update: "I graduated from SCO 35 years ago last Saturday! How time flies!" She noted that her time at SCO included being introduced to her husband by an SCO classmate.

Dean Gurley, OD '80, was given the Edwin Dalstrom Distinguished Service Award by the Blytheville, Arkansas Lions Club.

Camile Chiasson, OD '81,
recently received the Optometry Association of Louisiana's Public Service Award for recognition of extraordinary public service to the visual welfare of mankind. He has served as the association's legislative key person for many of the state's legislators. 

Cynthia Baker, OD '83, was elected President of the Optometry Association of Louisiana at the OAL's June 5th annual convention. Other SCO alumni elected as officers include President-elect Kevin Kasovich, OD '04, President of the Northshore Optometric Society Adam Paddock, OD '03, President of the Southeast Optometric Society Cory Boudreaux, OD '08, and President of the Gulf Optometric Society Lisa Mitchell, OD '04.

Clifford Turner, OD '83, was profiled in this news story about his weekend work with NASCAR.

Fred Farias III, OD '87, has been appointed to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Read more in this news story.

Our thoughts are with Mike Rothschild, OD '97, and his associates, after a fire destroyed his Georgia practice earlier this month.

Jeff Anastasio, OD '01, was named OD of the Year by the Optometry Association of Louisiana
. He has served on every position of the OAL Board of Directors as well as on the Legislative Committee.

Janet Monaco, OD '08, married Shawn Wilson in Spartanburg, South Carolina on May 16.

Matt Jones, OD '09, and his wife, Allison, welcomed a daughter, Sutton Elizabeth, pictured, on May 20.

Adam T. Shupe, OD '09, was recently honored with the California Optometric Association's Young OD of the Year Award. Dr. Shupe also has been elected President-elect of the Sacramento Valley Optometric Society.

Melia Robertson, OD '10, and her husband, Justin, welcomed a son, Evan Thomas, born March 26. He has a big sister, Emmarie.

Cody Patterson, OD '15, and his wife, Kayla, welcomed a son, Jace Wyatt, on May 31.

Whitney Hauser, OD '01,
authored an article in Review of Optometry and was interviewed on the local TBN affiliate's TV health program.

Aaron Kerr, OD '98,
was recently elected SCO's Faculty Chair and will serve as Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees.
 
Chris Lievens, OD, MS, was quoted in an article about contact lens wear for INVISION Magazine. Dr. Lievens was among the poster presenters (pictured) at last month's ARVO meeting and at the British Contact Lens Association meeting in the UK. He and Kristin Anderson, OD, were featured speakers at the New Hampshire Optometric Association's summer meeting June 4-7.

Christina Newman, OD, helped organize the hosting of the Association of Optometric Contact Lens Educators (AOCLE) on the SCO campus this month. The group included contact lens educators from around the nation as well as a significant number of industry partners. The attendees gathered for a group photo, pictured.

Glen Steele, OD '69, was quoted in this AOA News article about the prevalence of low vision in the American South, and another article about the 10th anniversary of the InfantSEE program, including a June 26th observance at the AOA meeting in Seattle.
