SCO Leadership Changes Announced
Southern College of Optometry announced this week that Lewis Reich, OD, PhD, Professor and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, has been named Interim President following the resignation earlier this week of Richard W. Phillips, OD '78. Dr. Reich joined SCO's faculty in 2008 as Vice President for Academic Affairs following nearly a decade of service at Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry, where he served as Associate Professor and as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. A 1988 graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, he completed a residency in low vision rehabilitation at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and later joined the faculty. He received his PhD from the University of Houston in 1999. J. Bart Campbell, OD '87, has been named Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Campbell previously served as the Chair of Optometric Education, where his primary responsibilities included the design and implementation of the college's optometric curriculum. Dr. Campbell completed his contact lens practice residency in 1988 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry. He also chairs the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education. SCO Campaign Totals Announced
Numbers Raised in Record Time
 SCO has ended its five-year "Envision Our Progress" campaign at SECO, nearly two years early after surpassing its original $4 million goal. The full reveal was previewed to top donors at a special reception last month at SECO and then officially announced at SCO's annual reception for alumni and friends at SECO. The final tally came to $4,700,919. SCO's thanks its donors and industry partners, as meeting the goal demonstrates SCO is well prepared for future successes to strengthen SCO's stature as the nation's leading optometry college. If you would like to add to our historic campaign totals, additional gifts are being accepted through April 30. SCO's annual Spring CE program will offer alumni and other ODs more than 20 hours of COPE-approved continuing education April 17-19 on campus in Memphis. Three different workshops are available on Friday, with nine courses set for Saturday and Sunday. News about SCO's Alumni and Faculty
Jerry Hayes, OD '73, visited the Hayes Center for Practice Excellence's booth at SECO to sign copies of his recently published book, How to Measure and Improve Staff Productivity in Private Practice Optometry, for the first 30 ODs who visited.
Dale Morris, OD '73, was honored at SECO upon his retirement as the long-time chair of SECO's Exhibits Committee. Richard W. Phillips, OD '78, was named OD of the South at SECO in March.
Wes Garton, OD '80, of Wichita, Kansas, was elected to the Heart of America Contact Lens Society Board of Directors for a two-year term at the recent annual meeting held in in Kansas City, Missouri. Dr. Garton is a native of Wichita and served as President of the Kansas Optometric Association Board of Directors from 2009-2010.
Andy Cook, OD '81, recently was reappointed to a second five-year term on the North Carolina State Board of Optometry.
Joe Ellis, OD '86, has been appointed by Kentucky's Governor to the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Development Authority. Read more in this news release.
TOA President Fred Farias, III, OD '87, was named OD of the Year by the Texas Optometric Association.
Mark Greer, OD '87, was joined by two recent alumni as they volunteered at a recent RAM event in Knoxville: Anna Ablamowicz, OD '13, left, and Stephanie McLin Cox, OD '12, pictured at right.
Jarrett Johnson, OD '90, is celebrating her 25th anniversary of practicing optometry, a milestone highlighted on a New Orleans TV promo in which she was interviewed.
Stuart Greenberg, OD '01, and his mother, Martha Rosemore Morrow, OD '74, were recently profiled in this newspaper story about their family's multi-generational history with the profession of optometry.
Jennifer Powell, OD '06, and her husband, Scott Morrison, welcomed a daughter, Zola Michelle on January 26. They reside in Durham, North Carolina and own a private practice, Academy Eye Associates.
Brandon Ross, OD '11, and Laura England, OD '11, were wed on February 14, 2015 in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Kayli Malzahn Schwamb, OD '11, and Matt Schwamb, OD '12, are married and practicing at Clarkson Eyecare in Missouri. They recently encountered Chris Lievens, OD, and Kristin Anderson, OD, during a visit to New Orleans and posed for this group photo.
David Hite, OD '13, and Canaan Montgomery, OD '14, recently spoke to SCO's third-year class via a webcast about practice management and opening their own practices. The online session was arranged by Lisa Wade, OD '84, and SCO's Hayes Center for Practice Excellence.

Faculty and SCO Updates Chris Borgman, OD, was a speaker at The Eye Specialty Group's 10th Annual Optometric CE Seminar last month. Dennis Mathews, OD, an ESG partner and long-time SCO faculty member, also presented. John Mark Jackson, OD '99, co-authored an article with SCO resident Catherine Tuong, OD, in last month's Contact Lens Spectrum. Dr. Jackson also was a lecturer at last weekend's Contemporary Management of Keratoconus seminar series held in conjunction with UT's Hamilton Eye Institute in Memphis. Chris Lievens, OD, recently lectured at the National Optometric Association meeting in Jackson, Mississippi. Dr. Lievens was also interviewed by the Australian ophthalmic press for this story about Meibomian Gland Regeneration. Jared Powelson, OD '96, coordinated last month's annual Laser Symposium for SCO's third-year interns on campus with visiting professionals from TLC Laser Eye Centers. Other participating faculty included Jason Duncan, OD '97, Bill Edmondson, OD, Scott Ensor, OD '01, Michael Gerstner, OD '97, and Esla Subashi Speth, OD '10.Glen Steele, OD '69, was interviewed by Optometry Times about how the Affordable Healthcare Act can help improve access to pediatric eye care. Greg Wolfe, OD, pictured, has joined SCO's faculty as an Associate Professor. He is a graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and holds a Master's degree in Public Health. He previously taught six years at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science and seven years on the faculty of Southern California College of Optometry. Lisa Rossmeyer Wade, OD '84, was recently interviewed by the Memphis Business Journal about her leadership as Director of the Hayes Center for Practice Excellence.
