SCO alumni and friends are invited to interact with the college at a number of upcoming events at SECO 2015, March 4-8 in Atlanta. SCO's booth, #1525, in the Exhibit Hall will be open Thursday from 1-6 pm, Friday 11 am-5 pm, and Saturday 11 am-5 pm. The Hayes Center for Practice Excellence will also have a booth this year, so if you're looking for a practice partner or thinking about selling or retiring, it's a good chance to network and learn more about SCO's Placement Services. All alumni and friends are invited to SCO's annual Alumni Reception on Friday, March 6 from 6:30-8:30 at the Omni Hotel. Visit our SECO pages online to learn more. 

Hayes Center Seeks Award Nominees
Second Annual Practice of Excellence Awards

The Hayes Center is accepting applications for the 2nd annual Practice of Excellence Award. The Hayes Center's award is designed to identify and reward successful practices as well as recognizing SCO's graduates and fostering relationships between our alumni and students. Three different awards are being given to graduates from the last decade at various stages in their careers. The deadline to apply or nominate someone is March 15. Spring CE Set for April 17-19 in Memphis
Registration Now Open

SCO's annual Spring CE program will offer alumni and other ODs more than 20 hours of COPE-approved continuing education April 17-19 on campus in Memphis. Three different workshops are available on Friday, with nine courses set for Saturday and Sunday. Jim Newman, OD '73, SCO Professor Emeritus, recently spoke to Baptist College of Health Sciences students as part of Baptist's leadership lecture series. 

Fred Farias, III, OD '87,
recently was appointed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Dr. Farias serves as President of the Texas Optometric Association. Learn more in this news story.

Outgoing Board of Trustees Chair Jarrett Johnson, OD '90, was honored for her service at last month's Board dinner with a plaque presented to her by new Chair, Steven Reed, OD '95, pictured.

Adam Bryan, OD '05, and Kristy Tart-Bryan, OD '05, recently opened a new location for their private practice in North Carolina. Read more in this profile.
 
Anita Blanchard Schulz, OD '09, and her husband, Brenton Schulz, welcomed a daughter, Annalise Katherine, on January 23, 2015. She weighed 7.2 lbs., and was 20 inches long. 

Faculty and SCO Updates


SCO recently welcomed its newest Board of Trustees member, Dave Sattler, pictured. Known for his many years of leadership within the ophthalmic industry, Sattler retired last year from Alcon after 28 years of service, including overseeing Academic Development as Director of Professional Relations. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and serves on the AOA's Foundation Board as a volunteer member. Learn more in this news release.

During last month's meeting, members of SCO's Board of Trustees toured University Eye Care, SCO's satellite clinic that opened in November 2013 on the University of Memphis campus.
 
Chris Borgman, OD, recently authored a Primary Care Optometry news article on inexpensive treatment options for common conditions.

Lewis Reich, OD, PhD, Bart Campbell, OD '87, and Marc Taub, OD, have been elected to Distinguished Fellowship in the National Academies of Practice and the Optometry Academy as Distinguished Practitioners and Fellows.

Dan Fuller, OD, was recently featured on The Ohio State University College of Optometry's website as his alma mater's Notable Alumnus of the day.

Michael Gerstner, OD '97, Whitney Hauser, OD '01, and Mike Dorkowski, OD '04, were among the lecturers earlier this month at SCO's second annual Destination CE event held in conjunction with the Optometry Association of Louisiana meeting in New Orleans. Thanks to all our alumni, including many younger alumni, pictured, who participated, as well as alumni who also visited SCO's booth last weekend at the Heart of America meeting in Kansas City.

Paul Harris, OD, co-authored an article in Optometry Times about using tinted color lenses to help migraine sufferers whose headaches are triggered by lighting.

Chris Lievens, OD, and Kristin Anderson, OD, are traveling this week to Australia to lecture at the Southern Regional Congress & Trade Expo.

Amanda Phelps Tompkins, OD '13, pictured, has joined SCO's faculty. She completed her SCO residency in 2014.

Glen Steele, OD '69, recently spoke to parents at a Mississippi workshop to improve overall readiness for school. He serves on the coalition that helped guide the certification process for Hernando, Mississippi.

Marc Taub, OD, co-authored an article recently published in Optometry and Vision Science on "Astigmatism and Early Academic Readiness in Preschool Children."

Lisa Rossmeyer Wade, OD '84, was recently interviewed by the Memphis Daily News about her new role in leading the Hayes Center for Practice Excellence at SCO.
