 Commencement Set for May 9
SCO will welcome 115 graduates into the profession as they transition from students into alumni at commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2014. The May 9th ceremony moves this year to the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts (pictured) in downtown Memphis. Former AOA President Dori Carlson, OD, will be delivering the commencement address in place of U.S. Senator John Boozman, OD '77, following his emergency heart surgery this week. In addition to Senator Boozman and Dr. Carlson, former Alcon Laboratories Vice President Ralph Stone, PhD, will also receive an honorary degree.

Alumni Attend Spring CE
First Spring CE Held in SCO's New Classrooms
SCO's new classrooms and academic facility hosted Spring Continuing Education classes for the first time earlier this month. Hundreds of alumni were on campus for 22 hours of education, including 10 different courses and workshops. Alumni speakers included Jack Schaeffer, OD '77, and his son, Mark Schaeffer, OD '11 (pictured); faculty speakers included Marie Bodack, OD, Mike Dorkowski, OD '04, Scott Ensor, OD '01, Dan Fuller, OD, Paul Harris, OD, Whitney Hauser, OD '01, Taylor Kiser, OD '12, Reena Lepine, OD '11, Jennifer Snyder, OD '12, Marc Taub, OD, and Patricia Estes-Walker. Hayes Center Award Recipients Announced
Young Alumni Recognized for Practice Excellence
 The inaugural recipients of the Practice of Excellence Award have been announced by the Hayes Center for Practice Excellence at SCO. Three different $5,000 awards were designated to honor alumni at different stages of their career who exemplify the private practice standards promoted by the Hayes Center. David Hite, OD '13, Micah Thomason, OD '09, and David Mitchell, OD '04, are this year's recipients. Joe B. Rupe, OD '67, announces his retirement. His plans are to pursue his ranching and golfing activities, along with spending more time with his grandchildren.
Mark Mather, OD '76, recently retired after nearly 40 years of practice in Iowa.
SCO President Richard W. Phillips, OD '78, has been appointed to the Federal Relations Committee of the American Optometric Association. Mark Kapperman, OD '87, pictured, spoke to SCO's Practice Management Class following his participation earlier this month when the Hayes Center for Practice Excellence Advisory Board held its meeting on campus. Hayes Center founder, Jerry Hayes, OD '73, was also in attendance.
Ryan Powell, OD '02, successfully competed and finished in this year's Boston Marathon.
Chris Wroten, OD '02, spoke at this week's Grand Rounds luncheon for faculty and residents as part of a lecture series sponsored by Alcon.
Chelsey Clemans, OD '09, and her husband, Adam, welcomed a daughter, Clare Adalynn, pictured, born December 24, 2013. She weighed 7 lbs., 4 ozs., and was also welcomed by her big brother, A.J.

Faculty Updates
Chris Borgman, OD, wrote about macular degeneration in this week's Memphis Daily News. Dr. Borgman was invited to write three more articles as guest editorials for upcoming issues.
Bill Edmondson, OD, was among the faculty publishing the Spring Newsletter of the Association of Optometric Contact Lens Educators available online at AOCLE.org.
Glenn Goldring, OD '78, has been named Interim Director of the Hayes Center for Practice Excellence at SCO. Current Director Jerry Eisenstatt, OD '84, will be returning to concentrate more on his successful private practice in June.
Paul Harris, OD, and Glen Steele, OD '69, are featured in this recently published Hoya Kids Panel White Paper.
Al Kabat, OD, co-authored the article, "Collateral Damage," appearing in the February 15 issue of Review of Optometry.
Glen Steele OD '69, lectured on infant evaluation and management recently at Southern Eye Associates in Memphis. He also introduced entertainer Tom Sullivan at a recent event for low vision children and their families held on the SCO campus. Dr. Steele also was recently interviewed for optometrystudents.com.
