Winter Weather Policy

The safety of our families is always our number one priority. When winter weather hits, we will generally follow the lead of schools in the area to decide if our meetings will go on as scheduled.

For meetings in Hancock County, we follow the closure schedule of Greenfield-Central Community Schools.  In Shelby County we follow the closure schedule of Shelbyville Central Schools.  If school is closed, FUSE meetings and events will be cancelled.  If school is released early and evening events are cancelled, FUSE evening events will also be cancelled.

There could be situations where FUSE cancels an event even if school events are not cancelled, so the best way to be sure if FUSE events are happening as scheduled is to check our website and Facebook page.

Fundraising Volunteers Needed

Do you enjoy getting out and about talking to new people?  Like to give back to your community?  FUSE is looking for a few good men and women who would like to assist with some of our fundraising events.  Volunteers are needed to work with planning committees to go out and share information about our fundraisers with potential event sponsors.

If you are interested in assisting with securing sponsors for our fundraisers and programs, please contact Amy Borgmann at 317-462-9064 or [email protected].

Wow, February went fast!   I don't know about you, but I could use those extra couple of days that the other months of the year bring.  Last month I promised to send out a weekend edition of articles and resources from other organizations, but time sped by and that never happened. I have included a couple of items here, and I will definitely try to get a larger newsletter done in the next few days, so keep an eye out. In the meantime, here's what's happening with FUSE!

March Parent Meetings To Identify Gaps in Services

In March FUSE will host Jodi Maslanka from Buttermilk Mountain to lead an interesting discussion.  Buttermilk Mountain hosts educational and fun events for families with special needs, and they have been holding round table discussions on what's missing from the special needs community.  What can Buttermilk Mountain provide that other organizations are not providing?  Come on our and join the discussion!

One of the ideas Buttermilk Mountain is implementing is that parents of children with special needs don't know what to do when, so they put together a Time Line.  Parents can check off what they've already accomplished, and Buttermilk Mountain will notify them when it is time to take the next step and help them find the resources needed.  We hope you will join us to talk about gaps in services and programs for kids with Buttermilk Mountain. Wondering about the name?  Maslanka means buttermilk in Polish.

Plan to Attend the Inspiring Abilities Expo

Register now to attend the 9th annual Inspiring Abilities Expo!  Nearly 50 vendors are already registered to exhibit, and more vendor applications arrive daily!

The Inspiring Abilities Expo offers families and professionals a great opportunity to network with organizations and service providers who meet the unique needs of children with disabilities.  Vendor information will be added to our website the first week of February, so check the website often for updates.

Four speakers will be scheduled throughout the day, so expo attendees can browse the exhibit hall, then take some time to listen to presentations that are relevant to their own child and family.  Sessions will be relevant for all age groups, so families with young children can learn as much as families whose children are transitioning from high school to adult life.

Saturday, March 14, 2015
9:00 am to 1:00 am
Greenfield-Central High School
810 N Broadway

Greenfield IN 46140

Cost: no charge

Parents and professionals who want to attend the expo, just click here to register!

Child care is available on site, but you must register via the registration link to reserve space in the child care.

If you are an organization or service provider who would like to have an exhibit booth at the expo, it's not too late to register.  Sponsor registration ends February 27, but we will take additional vendors as long as we have available space.

Just click here to download the exhibitor form.

Growing Together Early Learning Series Comes to Shelbyville

FUSE is pleased to announce that our Growing Together Early Learning Series is coming to Shelby County! The Growing Together Early Learning Series will give families of young children ideas for fun play-based activities that will support the development of early learning skills and help children achieve developmental milestones.

Parents attend the session with their child and get hands-on training from a pediatric therapist specializing in the developmental area targeted for each session, including speech/language, gross motor, fine motor or social/emotional development. Parents may attend one session or as many sessions as their schedule allows. Eligible children will be ages one to five and must be residents of Shelby County.  Parents will take home a gift basket of toys from each session valued at $25 or more!

Advance registration is required for each session.   The schedule of each session includes:

March 7        Let's Play (social/emotional development)

March 28      Time to Talk (speech/language)

April 11        Big Muscles (focus on gross motor skills)

April 25        All About Senses (fine motor/ sensory)

Registration for Let's Play on March 7 is full.  We will take names for the waiting list, so call 317-462-9064 if you want to be on the waiting list in case of cancellations. Let's Play will help parents understand how to support social and emotional development through play. The session will focus on activities such as body awareness, imitation, give and take, eye contact, and social interaction.

Time to Talk will help parents understand the importance of speech and language development as it relates to their child's social skills, confidence, peer relationships, reading skills and much more!  There are just a couple of spots left for Time to Talk, so click here to register.

Registration for the April sessions is opening soon. Check our website to register in the next week or so.

We are happy to be partnering with Pediplay on this project.  Pediplay is located in Indianapolis and has been providing pediatric therapy in central Indiana for over 25 years.

The Growing Together Early Learning Series is sponsored in part by a grant from Blue River Community Foundation and support from JMC Technology Group and Frey Construction.

For questions contact our office at 317-462-9064 or send us an email.

Waiver Services Now Offered by Autism Society of Indiana

ASI is now an approved provider of select services through the Family Supports Waiver (FSW) and the Community Integration and Habilitation (CIH) waiver, in Allen, Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Marion, Morgan, Shelby counties.

If your child needs to burn off some energy, build up some stamina, or just socialize with peers, TOPSoccer is a great activity!  Greenfield Area Soccer Club offers TOPSoccer year around. In the winter it is indoors and the other seasons are outdoors, so any time is a good time to sign up and play!

Family Fun Day Replaces June Meetings

We have decided to suspend our regular June meetings this year to try something new.  Instead of our regular meetings or picnics like we've done in the past, we are planning a Family Fun Day at Nameless Creek Youth Camp on Sunday, June 7, from noon to 5.  We hope all our families will be able to join us for a day of outdoor games and fun.  We will have a pitch in lunch, and families are free to explore the camp together. Plan to bring your outdoor games to share. If it is warm we may have some water based games too!

More details will be available as the time grows closer, but we wanted you to put this fun day on your calendar now. Be sure to extend an invitation to other families you know who could benefit from FUSE as well!  We would love this to be an opportunity to introduce new families to our FUSE families.

Let us know how we can help you find other resources and supports that you may need for your child. Have a great weekend!
