Winter Weather Policy

The safety of our families is always our number one priority. When winter weather hits, we will generally follow the lead of schools in the area to decide if our meetings will go on as scheduled.

For meetings in Hancock County, we follow the closure schedule of Greenfield-Central Community Schools.  In Shelby County we follow the closure schedule of Shelbyville Central Schools.  If school is closed, FUSE meetings and events will be cancelled.  If school is released early and evening events are cancelled, FUSE evening events will also be cancelled.

There could be situations where FUSE cancels an event even if school events are not cancelled, so the best way to be sure if FUSE events are happening as scheduled is to check our website and Facebook page.

Fundraising Volunteers Needed

Do you enjoy getting out and about talking to new people?  Like to give back to your community?  FUSE is looking for a few good men and women who would like to assist with some of our fundraising events.  Volunteers are needed to work with planning committees to go out and share information about our fundraisers with potential event sponsors.

If you are interested in assisting with securing sponsors for our fundraisers and programs, please contact Amy Borgmann at 317-462-9064 or [email protected].

Many busy days and nights have passed since we sent out a full newsletter, and we have a lot to share with FUSE families and friends!  In fact, there is so much to tell you that we plan to send out two emails this week.  This FUSE Ink will contain information only about FUSE events.  The weekend version will include information from other organizations around central Indiana.

One big behind-the-scenes change for us this month has been the implementation of a new web-based software that will help us improve efficiency in the FUSE office. While that kind of info is usually more exciting to the staff than to you, we are sharing it because you may notice some changes when you register for events, volunteer, donate, etc.  When you do any of those for the first time, you will get an account on our system and be able to manage your own information if you like. Since you will be logging in, the system will remember your details, and ultimately it will be easier to sign up for things.  Just know that we are still learning the ins and outs of using all the features, so if it generates any unusual messages to you, just let us know so we can figure out what we've done! :)  This new system was made possible through a capacity building grant from the Hancock County Community Foundation, so BIG THANKS to the foundation for helping us work smarter and not harder!

Now....on to the news!

Greenfield Parent Meeting To Focus on Fire Safety

Beth Gulley, Fire and Life Safety Educator at the Sugar Creek Township Fire Department, will visit the FUSE meeting in Greenfield to share fire safety tips for your home and special considerations for children with special needs. Topics covered will include basic fire prevention measures, preparing for a fire, and creating a safety and escape plan. Come to learn more about the types of smoke alarms that are available to meet the needs of people with disabilities, what products are available to aid in the evacuation of those with special needs, and ways to help the firefighters better understand your family's needs in an emergency.

Child care reservations are also required so we can plan enough caregivers.  Please complete the child care section on the registration form if you plan to bring children.

If you have questions about the meeting, please call 317-462-9064 or send us an email at our contact link.

Shelbyville Meeting Topic is Managing Challenging Behavior

In February we are hosting Melissa Harness and Amiee Taylor from Beyond the Label.  Melissa and Amiee will be presenting information about challenging behavior.  We had this topic a couple of times in 2014, but parents always seem to enjoy hearing different perspectives and getting new tips and hints on managing through some difficult times with their children!  The presentation will cover the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, and take a look at various types of problem behaviors, the function of those behaviors, and what tools parents can use to make a change in behavior.

Growing Together Early Learning Series Comes to Shelbyville

FUSE is pleased to announce that our Growing Together Early Learning Series is coming to Shelby County! The Growing Together Early Learning Series will give families of young children ideas for fun play-based activities that will support the development of early learning skills and help children achieve developmental milestones.

Parents attend the session with their child and get hands-on training from a pediatric therapist specializing in the developmental area targeted for each session, including speech/language, gross motor, fine motor or social/emotional development. Parents may attend one session or as many sessions as their schedule allows. Eligible children will be ages one to five and must be residents of Shelby County.  Parents will take home a gift basket of toys from each session valued at $25 or more!

Advance registration is required for each session.   The schedule of each session includes:

February 21  Let's Play (social/emotional development)

April 11        Big Muscles (focus on gross motor skills)

April 25        All About Senses (fine motor/ sensory)

TBD             Time To Talk (speech/language)

Registration is now open for Let's Play on February 21. Click here to register!

Let's Play will help parents understand how to support social and emotional development through play. The session will focus on activities such as body awareness, imitation, give and take, eye contact, and social interaction. Parents will take home a gift basket of toys that will be used in the session, valued at $25 or more!

We are happy to be partnering with Pediplay on this project.  Pediplay is located in Indianapolis and has been providing pediatric therapy in central Indiana for over 25 years.

The Growing Together Early Learning Series is sponsored in part by a grant from Blue River Community Foundation and support from JMC Technology Group.

Strike a Difference Bowl-a-thon

You are invited to join us in supporting our upcoming charity fundraiser, "Strike a Difference for FUSE" Bowl-A-Thon, which will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2015. This year's Bowl-A-Thon will be bigger than ever, and we would love for you to be a part of the FUN!

We will have terrific prizes to draw for during the evening. Everyone typically walks away with a door prize of some kind! We also have great silent auction items you can bid on!

All bowlers are challenged to raise a minimum of $100. It's as easy as getting 10 people to sponsor you for $10 each. Again this year we will have a special prize for the top individual fundraiser.  Use our easy social fundraising page, which is already set up with all the details you need. Just add your own personal note to friends and family, and even upload a photo if you want.  Then share the link with friends and family by email, Facebook or twitter. EASY!  Even if you can't bowl with us, you are welcome to raise funds for the event through social fundraising. Or, support one of our bowlers by donating to their page! Just use the handy links below.

Plan to Attend the Inspiring Abilities Expo

Register now to attend the 9th annual Inspiring Abilities Expo!  More than 25 vendors are already registered to exhibit, and more vendor applications arrive daily!

The Inspiring Abilities Expo offers families and professionals a great opportunity to network with organizations and service providers who meet the unique needs of children with disabilities.  More than 25 vendors are already registered to exhibit, and more vendor applications arrive daily!  Vendor information will be added to our website the first week of February, so check the website often for updates.

Four speakers will be scheduled throughout the day, so expo attendees can browse the exhibit hall, then take some time to listen to presentations that are relevant to their own child and family.  Sessions will be relevant for all age groups, so families with young children can learn as much as families whose children are transitioning from high school to adult life.

Saturday, March 14, 2015
9:00 am to 1:00 am
Greenfield-Central High School
810 N Broadway
Greenfield IN 46140
