Message from the BALIF Board
|
Greetings!
I wrote this statement on Saturday expressing my excitement for the upcoming Pride events and our community. After Sunday's tragedy, I sat down multiple times to re-write this short statement and have found myself overwhelmed with emotion and at a complete loss for words. Pride carries with it so many different emotions each year. After many years of Pride being dominated by celebrations, this tragedy has cast a dark cloud over it and reminds us of the purpose for which Pride began - not as a celebration, but as an act of visibility, resistance and resilience.
Violence is not new to our community and this tragedy is just another illustration of how far we still have to go to dismantle the hatred and vitriol we face daily. Working in this civil rights movement has afforded me the opportunity to get to know some of our most influential and resilient Latinx leaders. It has been particularly difficult to witness their extreme grief. The media, and those in positions of power, have largely ignored the impact of this violence on their community. Instead, their attention and anger has been lodged toward the Muslim community. We must reject any effort to exploit this tragedy to justify acts based on fear and intolerance.
Now is a time for grief and healing. As the world looks at our community and tries to make sense of this tragedy and the multiple intersections of oppression it encompasses, I urge each and every one of us to support one another in our grief, particularly our black and brown family, whose grief and fear likely far exceeds the rest of ours. Be safe this Pride and recognize the long history of our Pride marches and the resilience of our communities as we, once again, search for answers and solutions to the social ills that plague our society. Hopefully, we all can unite to address them. Love and struggle,
Jennifer Orthwein BALIF Board Community Activism Chair

For the last several years, we have held a widely popular anniversary celebration, called SPARK! BALIF Amicus Brief Archive Now Online
|
For more than thirty years, BALIF has been participating as amicus - a friend of the court - in major cases raising issues of concern to the LGBT community and our allies. Check out the new archive on BALIF's website, where you can learn more about BALIF's amicus participation and read BALIF's briefs on a wide range of issues, including: the rights of same-sex parents and partners; the unconstitutionality of state sodomy statutes; the interpretation of disability civil rights laws to people with HIV/AIDS; Don't Ask, Don't Tell; the scope of Title VII and other workplace protections for LGBTs under federal and California law; the asserted First Amendment rights of organizations that explicitly exclude LGBTs; marriage equality; medical care for transgender prisoners; and more. Please contact BALIF's Amicus Committee Chair, Julie Wilensky, amicus@balif.org, with any questions about or additions to the archive.
