Message from the BALIF Board
|
Greetings!
Only one week and one day left until June and SF Pride officially begins! This time of year, I often reflect on the many beautiful memories made during SF Pride, including the legal wins of recent years. I am always so excited to witness the strength and resilience of our beautiful community as we celebrate our authenticity with pride. Despite the joy and excitement this time of year brings, the reality is that our community is facing the usual challenges a presidential election year brings. Our rights, dignity and humanity are, once again, being compromised for political gain. And once again, we must fight the harassment, violence and discrimination that permeate our community, particularly our queer and transgender community members of color.
The new BALIF board has been hard at work planning another exciting year of events and activism! Speaking of activism, we would like to announce a new committee created specifically to support movement building and local activism. The Community Activism Committee will facilitate outreach and interaction with local organizations and other minority bar associations. It will also develop, coordinate and administer support services such as legal information, resources, and attorney volunteers for movement building events/actions. To learn more, make suggestions or get involved, please contact me at activism@balif.org.
Looking forward to seeing you all this Pride and standing beside you as we continue to fight for everyone's rights to live authentically and free from violence and discrimination. In Solidarity,
Jennifer Orthwein BALIF Board Community Activism Committee Chair

For more than thirty years, BALIF has been participating as amicus - a friend of the court - in major cases raising issues of concern to the LGBT community and our allies. Check out the new archive on BALIF's website, where you can learn more about BALIF's amicus participation and read BALIF's briefs on a wide range of issues, including: the rights of same-sex parents and partners; the unconstitutionality of state sodomy statutes; the interpretation of disability civil rights laws to people with HIV/AIDS; Don't Ask, Don't Tell; the scope of Title VII and other workplace protections for LGBTs under federal and California law; the asserted First Amendment rights of organizations that explicitly exclude LGBTs; marriage equality; medical care for transgender prisoners; and more. Please contact BALIF's Amicus Committee Chair, Julie Wilensky, amicus@balif.org, with any questions about or additions to the archive.
