Message from the BALIF Board
Greetings!

I had a rare opportunity to travel abroad with my family for a couple of weeks. Despite this precious time with my loved ones, I'm embarrassed to admit that I struggled at first to leave work and other responsibilities behind. I get to travel all over the Mediterranean and I'm worried about work e-mails? I feel ridiculous even typing that. Even Nana sensed my preoccupation and scolded me, "I can tell you're busy."

Gradually, the stress subsided and I made myself present for this wonderful adventure with my grandparents and my sister. At the end of the trip, I felt relieved and possessed a restored confidence and focus upon returning to the office. Quality time with my family was the perfect cure after an extremely busy time with work and other commitments.
It is very easy to allow work to consume us, rather than making room for everything else in our lives. For many, this is a month where we give thanks. If you find yourself in a similar situation as mine, I hope my story helps you put on the brakes to reflect and enjoy the moment. It is worth every second.

Sincerely,

Lindsey Rosellini

Empire San Francisco: Battle By The Bay
You are invited to join us as a presiding judge or scoring juror at our second annual international west coast competition, Empire San Francisco: Battle By The Bay. Students will be arguing a complex and timely civil case involving the shooting of a young African-American male by an off-duty police officer near the site of an alleged armed robbery.

Trials will take place at U.S. District Court, N.D.CA., on November 21-23, 2015, when more than 250 students from five countries and eight states will be vying for the championship. Seven teams hail from California, including Lowell High School and Bishop O'Dowd from the Bay area.

By volunteering just a few hours to evaluate the students on their trial advocacy skills, you can make a meaningful impact on these young leaders' lives. We provide complimentary refreshments to show our appreciation. Upon request, colleagues can be placed in the same trial rounds.
