Message from the BALIF Board
|
Greetings!
I'm writing to you on an uncharacteristically summerish day in San Francisco for the month of July. It makes me think that we will all look back on Summer 2015 as one of extreme success for the LGBT movement. We already talked extensively about marriage equality -- and for good reason of course. But there are smaller bits of news that trickle in a few times a week that underscore the blistering progress the movement is making.
Just yesterday, the Boy Scouts of America overturned a ban on gay scout leaders, reversing a position that the organization had adopted just a couple years ago. The Boy Scouts' President, Bob Gates (the former Defense Secretary who played a big role in dismantling Don't Ask Don't Tell) stated ""[t]he status quo in our movement's membership standards cannot be sustained." If that's not demonstrative of the progress we have made changing hearts and minds -- even in the heartland -- then I don't know what is. Additionally, President Obama deemed LGBT rights important enough to make them a cornerstone of a press conference he gave half a world away, in a country (Kenya) and on a continent (Africa), that have fairly abysmal records on the issue. My guess is that hearts and minds will start changing in those places too.
Also, stay tuned for BALIF announcements and newsletters in the coming weeks. Your friendly BALIF Board has some exciting events planned for the fall.
