Message from the BALIF Board
Greetings!

After the dust settled from the historic gay marriage decision that dropped the day before Pride this year, many of us were asking ourselves, "What next?"  Several LGBT activists immediately pivoted toward nationwide employment protection.  On Friday, July 17, in a 3-2 party-line ruling, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission held that discrimination against gay persons violates Title VII's ban on discrimination on the basis of sex.  While its immediate effects are unknown, this ruling could pave the way for a national prohibition against employment discrimination against gays and lesbians.

If SCOTUS gives deference to the EEOC ruling and anti-gay employment discrimination becomes illegal nationally, "what next?" For me, the next issue that we must tackle is LGBTQ teen suicide.   LGB youth are 4 times more likely, and questioning youth are 3 times more likely, to attempt suicide as their straight peers.  Nearly half of young transgender people have seriously thought about taking their lives, and one quarter report having made a suicide attempt.

It is time to make a change.  We lose too many amazing warriors each year.

Sincerely,

Peter Catalanotti
