Message from the BALIF Board
|
Greetings!
I hope you have been enjoying the gorgeous weather over the past week.
As you may have heard, last Thursday the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit upheld the same-sex marriage bans in the states of Tennessee, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio, holding that the bans do not violate the Constitution. BALIF filed an amicus brief in June opposing the bans, and we are disappointed by this setback in the march toward marriage equality. The Sixth Circuit is the first federal circuit court to uphold same-sex marriage bans since the Supreme Court's decision in Windsor.
BALIF has been actively involved in the battle over same-sex marriage, coordinating with LGBT bar organizations, civil rights groups, and many other allies, to file amicus briefs in key cases across the country. Over the last year, with the pro bono support of Munger, Tolles & Olson, BALIF has filed amicus briefs opposing marriage bans in the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th, and 10th Circuits. We will continue to monitor the same-sex marriage battle and weigh in on these and other issues affecting our community.
We encourage you to contact us at amicus@balif.org if you are interested in joining the Amicus Committee or wish to suggest a case for submitting a brief.
We also encourage you to join BALIF for the many great events planned over the next few weeks. Today the 12th is the 2014 Minority Bar Coalition Unity Awards Reception at UC Hastings. Next Tuesday the 18th is our monthly Partners Exchange Luncheon for partners and law firm owners. And be sure to mark your calendars for the BALIF Holiday Party on December 10th!
Sincerely,
Leah Nutting

Minority Bar Coalition Unity Awards
|
Please join BALIF and other local minority bar associations Wednesday, November 12 for the 2014 Minority Bar Coalition Unity Awards Reception at UC Hastings. Come celebrate the extraordinary contributions of this year's honorees, including BALIF's very own Edward Joy.
The Minority Bar Coalition (MBC) is a network of more than 25 diverse bar associations in the Bay Area. Its annual Unity Awards recognize attorneys who have best shown a dedication to working in a unified manner to advance the cause of diversity in the legal profession.
Edward was nominated by the BALIF Board of Directors, which recognized Edward for outstanding work as Chair of the BALIF Community Ambassador Committee, working alongside the Asian American Bar Association (AABA) to stage a major fundraiser for the LGBTQQ youth organization LYRIC.
Edward has recruited a large and diverse Community Ambassador Committee, with two thirds of the Committee being people of color and half of the Committee being female. As Edward states, "The members of the Community Ambassador Committee represent BALIF throughout the year at galas and dinners sponsored by the other MBC organizations. I am proud that the face of BALIF is a diverse one."
Jamie Dupree, BALIF Board Co-Chair states, "Edward is BALIF's first Community Ambassador and in that role he has created a robust committee forging strong bonds with other MBC member organizations. He has gotten to know dozens of other MBC members on an individual level and has spearheaded a number of BALIF initiatives in support of MBC member causes, such as the joint BALIF/AABA LYRIC event and fundraiser. This award is richly deserved."
