What a joyful time. The Giants won the World Series. My kids and young people everywhere wore their costumes with pride and delighted all the adults on Halloween. And over 150 people came out for BALIF and ABBA's October 30 fundraising event for LYRIC at the Drake Lounge on October 30th, raising over $17,000 for LYRIC. Wow! Kudos go to BALIF board members Edward Joy and Jessica Bogo for their tireless work in support of this fundraiser. And thanks to our sponsors for your generosity in supporting LYRIC.   If you don't know LYRIC, you should. LYRIC helps LGBTQQ kids in all aspects of their life, including a powerful and life-changing job training program. LYRIC has been around for over 25 years, providing critical support to over a generation of LGBTQQ youth. The money raised by BALIF and ABBA will fund 17 kids in the job training program, helping them to get a job and changing their lives forever. One BALIF member at the October 30 event shared with me how much it meant to her that BALIF was doing the fundraiser for LYRIC. When she was a teen, LYRIC provided her with a much-needed safe haven to go and be herself. Her success is a testament to LYRIC's impact in our community. If you haven't had a chance to donate yet, you still can by contacting BALIF's Community Ambassador Edward Joy at communityambassador@balif.org.   There are other great events coming up. Don't miss BALIF's "Plus One" Happy Hour at 50 Mason this Thursday, November 6 - bring a friend or colleague new to BALIF (a "Plus One"). On Monday, November 10, BALIF and BASF are sponsoring a CLE on the Elimination of LGBT Bias in the Legal Profession with a number of superstar speakers (see details below). Law firm partners and owners are invited to BALIF's Partner Exchange monthly luncheon, with the next one on November 18. And don't forget to put BALIF's December 10th Holiday Party on your "Don't Miss" list.   BALIF, you inspire me. I can't wait to see what we accomplish next!     Sincerely,   Jamie Dupree BALIF Co-Chair |

 | Minority Bar Coalition Unity Awards  | |
Please join BALIF and other local minority bar associations Wednesday, November 12 for the 2014 Minority Bar Coalition Unity Awards Reception at UC Hastings. Come celebrate the extraordinary contributions of this year's honorees, including BALIF's very own Edward Joy.   The Minority Bar Coalition (MBC) is a network of more than 25 diverse bar associations in the Bay Area. Its annual Unity Awards recognize attorneys who have best shown a dedication to working in a unified manner to advance the cause of diversity in the legal profession.   Edward was nominated by the BALIF Board of Directors, which recognized Edward for outstanding work as Chair of the BALIF Community Ambassador Committee, working alongside the Asian American Bar Association (AABA) to stage a major fundraiser for the LGBTQQ youth organization LYRIC.   Edward has recruited a large and diverse Community Ambassador Committee, with two thirds of the Committee being people of color and half of the Committee being female.   As Edward states, "The members of the Community Ambassador Committee represent BALIF throughout the year at galas and dinners sponsored by the other MBC organizations. I am proud that the face of BALIF is a diverse one."   Jamie Dupree, BALIF Board Co-Chair states, "Edward is BALIF's first Community Ambassador and in that role he has created a robust committee forging strong bonds with other MBC member organizations. He has gotten to know dozens of other MBC members on an individual level and has spearheaded a number of BALIF initiatives in support of MBC member causes, such as the joint BALIF/AABA LYRIC event and fundraiser. This award is richly deserved."   Presented with UC Hastings Legal Education Opportunity ProgramWednesday, November 12, 2014
