Message from the BALIF Board
|
Greetings!
Hello and Happy (early) Halloween! Since Halloween is only a few days away, it's time to finish sewing, purchasing, making, or borrowing those Halloween costumes! I already have my costume and if you want to see what it is, you will definitely want to come to the Halloween Eve Fundraising Extravaganza for LYRIC.
This Thursday, October 30th is an event co-sponsored by BALIF and AABA: The Halloween Eve Fundraising Extravaganza for LYRIC. As you probably already know from our last newsletter, LYRIC is an organization that provides a wide array of social services to primarily very low income or homeless LGBTQ youth. Through its Youth Workforce Program, LYRIC provides LGBTQ youth paid job training internships. So, this Thursday, October 30th, come on out to the Drake Lounge in San Francisco from 6pm-9pm at 508 4th Street in SF. Costumes not mandatory, but always welcome.
Keep your calendars open for our November happy hour on Thursday, November 6th, starting at 6:30pm. This is the last happy hour of the year, so you definitely do not want to miss it. This Happy Hour is special because it is our "Plus One" event. If you know someone who has always been interested in BALIF, but have never come to our events, this is a great opportunity to show that friend all that BALIF has to offer. Bring your office mate, classmate, co-worker, boss, professor, that special someone, or even a family member out to this event. You will definitely have a great time.
Finally, for all of you who still need MCLE credits, especially if your compliance date is fast approaching, BALIF is co-sponsoring an Elimination of Bias MCLE with the BASF Subcommittee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues on Monday, November 10th. All BALIF members get the discounted BASF Rate of $25 for the event (when registering by phone or fax). The speakers include Shay Gilmore, Kelly Dermody, Julius Turman, and Erica Worthington. This MCLE will be located at the BASF Conference center, 3rd Floor, 301 Battery Street, from 5:30pm-7pm.
Have a Happy Halloween!!!
Sincerely,
Brandon Lawrence

Minority Bar Coalition Unity Awards
|
Please join BALIF and other local minority bar associations Wednesday, November 12 for the 2014 Minority Bar Coalition Unity Awards Reception at UC Hastings. Come celebrate the extraordinary contributions of this year's honorees, including BALIF's very own Edward Joy.
The Minority Bar Coalition (MBC) is a network of more than 25 diverse bar associations in the Bay Area. Its annual Unity Awards recognize attorneys who have best shown a dedication to working in a unified manner to advance the cause of diversity in the legal profession.
Edward was nominated by the BALIF Board of Directors, which recognized Edward for outstanding work as Chair of the BALIF Community Ambassador Committee, working alongside the Asian American Bar Association (AABA) to stage a major fundraiser for the LGBTQQ youth organization LYRIC.
Edward has recruited a large and diverse Community Ambassador Committee, with two thirds of the Committee being people of color and half of the Committee being female. As Edward states, "The members of the Community Ambassador Committee represent BALIF throughout the year at galas and dinners sponsored by the other MBC organizations. I am proud that the face of BALIF is a diverse one."
Jamie Dupree, BALIF Board Co-Chair states, "Edward is BALIF's first Community Ambassador and in that role he has created a robust committee forging strong bonds with other MBC member organizations. He has gotten to know dozens of other MBC members on an individual level and has spearheaded a number of BALIF initiatives in support of MBC member causes, such as the joint BALIF/AABA LYRIC event and fundraiser. This award is richly deserved."
