Message from the BALIF Board
|
I want you to take a minute to imagine yourself managing a lifelong chronic condition, trying to live on a restricted income, in an extremely expensive city, when you suddenly receive an eviction notice. This is, unfortunately, the reality for many of my clients, as well as many other residents of our city. Housing is not a luxury, it is an absolute vital necessity, and the loss of your home is utterly devastating! I am excited, then, that BALIF is having its Housing Volunteer Day on Thursday October 2nd. Apart from the very exciting opportunity to gain useful negotiation experience, participants will also be helping some deserving folks gain back stability in their lives!
And if you can't make it this Thursday, just email my fellow Board member Jessica Bogo at socialaction@balif.org, and sign up for an opportunity to volunteer on another day!
Also don't forget to mark October 30th on your calendar, for the Lyric Halloween Event Fundraiser! Please consider becoming a Silver, Gold or Platinum sponsor, and your donations will ensure that some incredible young people get a job and a future!
So get involved and do some good!

* Willy Wilkinson, Claire Skiffington Vanguard Award: For his innovative leadership - from garnering attention and funds for trans* communities impacted by the AIDS epidemic to founding the first support group for FTM people of color to changing hearts and minds through his work and trainings.
* CeCe McDonald, Authentic Life Award: For her courage and resilience in bringing visibility to our diverse communities, the unjust ways that transgender people are treated by law enforcement and within the justice system, and the ways in which prisons are not safe for anyone, regardless of gender identity.
* ACLU of Northern CA, Community Partner Award: For their leadership and support in sponsoring AB1266, the School Success and Opportunity Act, and for being an unyielding, fierce, and fully committed stakeholder while defending the law against a potential referendum.
