Message from the BALIF Board

Greetings!

I hope you all enjoyed the gorgeous weather the Bay Area was spoiled with this weekend. As we move into the dog-days of summer riddled with vacations and relaxation for some (hopefully you), I am pleased our progress toward full marriage equality is not enjoying a similar break.

Over the weekend, Attorney General Eric Holder said that if the Supreme Court decides to hear a case on same-sex marriage, the Department of Justice will file a brief urging the courts to uphold the rights of gay couples to wed. With Utah's Federal Court of Appeals striking down the ban on gay marriage, the possibility of the high court hearing the issue is becoming more likely. It is comforting to know we have the Department of Justice behind the fight, not just in word, but in action as well.

With Colorado's ban on same-sex marriage struck down last Wednesday we are up to 19 states where same-sex couples may legally wed. Are you thinking of marrying your loved one, or did you just marry? Come learn about the pros and cons of marriage and the rights and responsibilities that come with it this Wednesday, July 16th at "Marriage...The Fine Print: 5 Surprising Facts Everyone Needs to Known."

It was great to see many of your shining summer faces at the July 10th happy hour last week. I hope to see many of you this Tuesday at the LGBTQ Partners and Associates Reception, sponsored by BASF and BALIF.

Marriage...The Fine Print:
5 Surprising Facts Everyone Needs to Know

Wednesday, July 16th 6:30pm-8:30pm

Marriage is the only license you don't have to study for.  It's a contract you can sign without understanding its terms. And yet, this license has a huge impact on your life.  In this workshop, we will address: the key rights and responsibilities of marriage, the pros and cons of marriage, which rights and responsibilities you can change and which are written in stone, and alternative ways to recognize your relationships. This workshop applies to all marriages and domestic partnerships. Enter your relationship on your own terms!

This workshop is led by: Stephanie Lee, CFP, financial advisor (www.eastrockfinancial.com) and Dylan Miles, Ph.D., J.D., family lawyer and mediator (www.milesfamilylaw.com)

LGBT People of
Color in the Legal Profession

Please join BALIF and the Asian American Bar Association's LGBT committee for a discussion about LGBT people of color in the legal profession. We have a distinguished group of panelists who are all LGBT persons of color, including:

  • Professor Russell Robinson (Distinguished Haas Chair in LGBT Equity Professor of Law, Berkeley Law School);
  • Christine Sun (Staff Attorney for the Immigrants' Rights Project, ACLU);
  • Felicia Medina (Managing Partner at the San Francisco Office of Sanford Heisler, LLP and BALIF Director);
  • And Craig Konnoth (Deputy Solicitor General at the Solicitor General's Office at the Attorney General of California) as moderator.

The discussion will focus on how the panelists' gender, sexual orientation, and race have affected their careers as attorneys. The panel will discuss how stereotypes about their multiple identities and their personal backgrounds have shaped their experiences as attorneys and affected their view of the legal profession. The panel will also discuss legal issues at the intersection of LGBT identities and race.

The panel will be followed by a reception with drinks, light appetizers, and opportunities for networking.
