It's hard to believe that January is almost over! However, there is no shortage of BALIF action and we have some great events coming up on the horizon.
For law students, BALIF is hosting its first ever "Need For Speed" Speed Resume review and Interview Skills workshop January 30th from 6-8pm at Pillsbury-Winthrop. This is a unique, BALIF member-only event just for law students and space is limited! Come get some valuable one-on-one advice on how to answer those tricky interview questions and see where you can improve on your resume, followed up by a reception at the end. What should I wear? - Business attire. We want you to make this experience as close to the real deal as possible.
As law students, we know that sometimes getting individualized feedback about your resume and interviewing skills can be difficult. Finding that next firm job or government externship can be a daunting task. With BALIF's speed networking event, we will help prepare you to deal with some of the most common, dreaded interview questions, what work experience or personalization you can add to your resume, and how to go into a job interview and feel like coming out a winner. After our rounds of speed networking, stick around and network with the attorneys to find out more about what steps you can take to get ahead in your job search!
Beginning January 2014, BALIF will now begin charging students an annual $10 membership fee to qualify to attend certain BALIF member-only events.

Congratulations to Tom Reilly, an '83 graduate of Berkeley's Boalt Hall and current BALIF member, for being featured in an article on SFGate regarding his role in "The Paris Letter," a play, which explores the price of sacrificing one's identity. Carl Wolf and Boone Callaway are pleased to announce that Nathaniel Leeds has joined Callaway and Wolf in an of counsel capacity. Nathaniel is a graduate of the University of Chicago and received his law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Nathaniel is an experienced trial lawyer, handling personal injury, medical malpractice, and other civil litigation. In 2013 Nathaniel was named a Rising Star by Super Lawyers Magazine as one of the top younger attorneys in the state.
BALIF member since 1980 and ALRP founding attorney Thomas Paul Rodgers married his partner Jack Berry Clift on January 15, 2014 at SF City Hall. Upon marriage, Jack took Tom's surname. They recently adopted a kitten and a puppy, are building a weekend home in Calaveras County and are very happy.

Celebrate the 35th Anniversary with Pride Law Fund in 2014.
To maximize the snowy experience, the first annual Pride Law Fund Gay Ski Day has been rescheduled to March 8, 2014. Join us for a gay day on the slopes, raising money for LGBT fellowships. Purchase tickets here!
Additionally, save the date for our third annual Boat Cruise around the Bay on May 31, 2014 and keep an eye out for details about the first annual Pride Law Fund Wine Bus Adventure in Napa in the fall.
Pride Law Fund is currently accepting applications for Tom Steele Post Graduate Fellowships and Law Students Summer Fellowships. Applications are due on March 3, 2014 and can be found on our website here.

Transgender Law Center's
Cooperating Attorney Network

Transgender Law Center is in the process of creating a robust cooperating attorney network. They are especially interested in developing a network of attorneys who can assist them with cases - either by sharing their expertise and knowledge or by serving as co-counsel. Transgender Law Center also needs attorneys to whom they can refer some of the 2,500 individuals who contact them each year from across the country. The CWL Rose Bird Memorial Award
|
CWL is now accepting nominations for the ROSE BIRD MEMORIAL AWARD. This annual award is named for one of CWL's founding members and is given to a jurist from Northern California. NOMINATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY FEBRUARY 28, 2014.The candidate should be from the Northern California area and will be evaluated on excellence as a jurist with longstanding or groundbreaking public service and inspiration to women lawyers in California. The nominations will be reviewed by the Awards Committee and the Board of Governors will announce the recipient of this honor on March 7, 2014. The Award will be presented at the Northern California Judicial Reception to be held in April of 2014. The awardee must be available to attend the reception held in their honor. The nomination should consist of the following: A. Nominee's Resume/Bio- Include the nominee's resume or biography. B. Nominee's Photo- Include a high resolution photograph of the nominee. C. Supporting Statement- A letter supporting the nominee as a worthy recipient of this honor with a description of the candidate's qualifications for this award. D. Articles and Letters- To present a comprehensive picture of the nominee, you may include news/magazine articles written by or about the candidate and letters of support from individuals or organizations. Lambda Legal 2014-2015 Tyron Garner Memorial Fellowship
|
Lambda Legal is pleased to announce its posting for the 2014-2015 Tyron Garner Memorial Fellowship for African-American LGBT Civil Rights, expanded in 2013 from a summer position to a year-long funded fellowship. Lambda Legal is a national nonprofit organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender ("LGBT") people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education, and public policy work. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in New York City, Lambda Legal has regional offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta and Dallas. The Garner Fellowship is a paid, full-time, year-long legal internship awarded to a recent law graduate to work in any of Lambda Legal's five offices.

Resilience in an Age of Limited Supply
Saturday, February 8, 2014
Hosted by UC Hastings College of the Law
This year's Symposium will focus on California water sustainability and finding "Resilience in an Age of Limited Supply." The program will tackle a variety of issues through the lens of managing water efficiently and sustainably. Panels will cover a range of topics, including new scientific developments for agricultural water management, analyzing current laws' adaptability to dwindling water supplies, and opening nontraditional water sources. The Symposium is a collaborative, student-led effort between Golden Gate University School of Law; UC Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall); UC Davis School of Law (King Hall); UC Hastings College of the Law; University of San Francisco School of Law; and the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. Every year, the Symposium brings together academics, practitioners, policymakers, scientists, community members, and students to hear from leading professionals on pressing water issues.
