Spring has finally arrived! Everyone is in good spirits and enjoying the beautiful weather. Amazing how invigorating a little sunshine can be, huh? Well the good news is that it's ALWAYS hot and sunny at Bikram Yoga Baltimore! Soak in the warmth and make BYB one of your sunny destination spots each day, including through the upcoming summer months.
Springtime is the best time to clean out the old and hit the restart button. Think about how you can refresh your yoga practice too, and be mindful of the habits that can impede a continuous meditation: Can you fidget less? Can you think twice before grabbing for your water (again)? Can you breathe a little more quietly? Can you commit to talking only in the common areas of the studio? This is a safe place and an escape for many, so consider how you can keep your practice and your etiquette fresh.
We have two wonderful yogis who will be heading off to Jackson Hole, Wyoming at the end of this month to participate in the National Yoga Asana Championships! Good luck to Leo Szymanski who will compete in the Senior Mens Division, and to our dear Anne Johnson who will compete in the Women's Division. We know you will both make BYB extremely proud!
As it continues to get warmer outside, make sure you're staying hydrated. Those smoothies and iced lattes must be in addition to, not instead of, your daily water intake! This will keep you going strong through the summer months and help you tolerate the rising temperatures and humidity.

Leo Szymanski and Anne Johnson will be traveling to Jackson Hole, Wyoming from Friday, May 20th through Sunday, May 22nd to compete in the 2016 National Yoga Asana Championships hosted by the USA Yoga Federation. While Jackson Hole is not close by, you will be able to watch our yogis in action from home! Look out for information about a Live Video Stream so you can cheer on our Champions from Baltimore! ARDHA-CHANDRASANA (HALF MOON)
May Posture of the Month
It's the first posture in the Bikram Series and sets the stage for the rest of your class. Half Moon pose is designed to warm up the spine, and all of the surrounding muscles and joints, by moving in all directions. You begin with your arms up, interlocked grip, making sure the arms stay touching with the ears for the duration of the posture. From a deep inhale stretching out of the waist, you bend to one side at a time in a perfectly straight line. Your hips and shoulders, if you were to look at the body from the side view, should be in one line, just like you were stuck between two panes of glass. From the front, your hips should be level horizontally, and eventually, your shoulders will stack one of top of the other vertically. As your fingers and hips push in opposite directions away from one another, your body will come down more to the side. Your knees must be locked and your stomach must be sucked in the entire time to ensure maximum and safe stretching of your spine. The backward bend mimics the side bends, just in a different direction! Make sure to keep as much air in your lungs as possible for all parts of the posture, which ensures you won't create unnecessary pressure in the lower back. Half Moon pose has a number of excellent benefits for the entire body. In addition to toning the gluteals, abdominals, and thighs, Half Moon creates flexibility in the spine, stretches the liver and kidneys improving their function, and strengthens the deltoids, obliques, trapezius muscles, and latissimus dorsi. It's an all encompassing posture that when given maximum effort will make your class the best it can possibly be!
