DECEMBER 2015 NEWSLETTER
seasonal_pinecones.jpg
Happy holidays BYB family! Thank you for making our community so special. During the holiday season, it feels extra good to share this amazing practice with the yogis we love most! That said, don't let the hustle and bustle of this busy time of year get in the way of a consistent practice. Enjoy your family, friends, and holiday parties, of course. But don't let your health go into hibernation. It's hard to keep up when things get busy, but a consistent yoga practice provides a necessary calm at this time of year. Besides there's no better place to be when it's cold outside than the hot room!

Consider doing some of your holiday shopping at our studios! Our retail racks are full with great new gear, and we have NEW gift cards available to give your favorite current or aspiring yogi. Share the gift of health and wellness, and celebrate the incredible body and mind you've been given through this practice.

We wish you all the best for a joyful, safe, restful, and healthy holiday season!

Love, Eddie and Emily

helpful_tips_abstract.jpg Yoga Etiquette Reminders

During this joyous time of year, it's important to remember how our actions affect those around us, the people we love and care about. As you continue in a mindful yoga practice, in the spirit of the holidays, remember these tips in and out of the hot room.

* Please be on time for class! We know traffic is out of your control and "life happens," but do your best to be ready and in the hot room when class begins. If you arrive 15 minutes late, you miss some of the most important parts the warm-up, which is disruptive to others and unsafe for your body. If you are running a few minutes behind, please call us so we know to look for you

* Be quick in the locker room! Showers are for rinsing off only, and studios are closed 30 minutes after class ends. Be mindful of your instructors' and fellow yogis' time and save all beauty rituals for home. Maintain appropriate locker room etiquette: please dry off before you exit the shower, keep your belongings neatly in one place, and share the space and amenities, respectfully, with your fellow yogis.

* Remember to take good care of you AND your yoga gear! If you practice regularly, your clothes, mats, and towels will need to be replaced more frequently. We have great new outfits, mats, and yogitoes in stock for the holidays. So treat
yourself and your fellow neighbor to some fresh-smelling new gear!

* Be aware of others sharing the yoga room with you. Of course we encourage yogis to focus on you, your body, and your own postures, but you still need to maintain certain etiquette while in the hot room. Make sure your mat isn't directly in front of someone else, very quietly gather your things after final savasana, keep tissues and such on your own mat, don't talk, and remember for some people this is their only oasis. Be the person you want to stand next to.

* Yoga continues outside of the hot room. This is one of the most important things we yogis need to remember and share with others. Bikram always says, "don't let anyone steal your peace." Yoga is about being mindful of your body, mind, spirit, and your words and actions. Exude positive energy and give support to your fellow yogis at all times. Remember, everybody has the same right to practice Bikram Yoga as you do, no matter what else is going on in their lives. Why do YOU practice yoga? Come to your next class with only that answer in mind.

Testimonial

"As a runner, approaching 40 years old, with 2 kids, I was starting to suffer from frequent injuries and it was becoming harder and harder to bounce back. I decided to purchase a Groupon for 20 sessions at Bikram Yoga Baltimore and started coming fairly consistently. Despite being exposed to Bikram for close to a decade...I never fully experienced the benefits of Bikram. After 20 sessions, I was hooked and could undoubtedly feel the benefits of the practice...don't change a thing. I can say with absolute certainty that your people are phenomenal and studios are well operated, those two things combined have resulted in an outstanding experience." --H. Markel

 Dhanurasana (Bow Pose)
  December Posture of the Month!

What a better posture of the month than the one that wraps you up like a bow! Just like many of the other postures, Bow Pose is a gift to your spine. It concludes the four postures of the spine strengthening series and for that reason, works all three parts of the spine. You begin the posture by grabbing your feet from the outside just below the toes. Your shoulders relax back, chin out with neck flat on the mat. As you start to kick your legs up and back behind you, simultaneously look up to the ceiling and lift your head and chest off the floor (eventually, your ribs will start to leave the floor, too). Your goal is to look like two wheels in one base, perfectly symmetrical from the front and from the side. Ideally, you will create a a perpendicular line in the center from the side view with your feet directly over the deepest point in the arch of your spine. You should also aim to create a line from your shoulders to your knees that is perfectly parallel to the floor. From the front view, your feet should be in line with each other, not one higher than the other, and your knees should not go wider than your hips. By maintaining this alignment, you will over time achieve the "perfectly tear drop shape" you hear referenced in class. Bow Pose is chuck full of benefits in addition to improving flexibility and circulation along in the full length of the spine. It opens up the rib cage, allowing your lungs to expand, and improves digestion, relieves bronchitis, and reduces diabetic symptoms through compression and release of the intestines, spleen, liver, and kidneys. Bow Pose also relieves most common back injuries. So give your spine the gift of a great Bow Pose your next class!

BYB Community Business Directory
Support your local yogis and their local businesses!

Within this community, we have been honored to meet so many talented people, all forging their own way in life. The emphasis on local, local, local that exists in Baltimore is something special. Really consider the businesses you patronize. Consider the relationships you value. Local businesses are owned by families, people in our community. And as yogis, we naturally  support each other.  BYB will launch our first ever Community Directory in January 2016! If you are a current yogi and want to share your business details with us, just complete the form through the link below. We look forward building our local community through good economy, good energy, and good yoga.
