Senators urge investigation into Canada dairy policies


In a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Sens. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) and Tammy Baldwin (D., Wis.) expressed concern about Canada's recently announced National Ingredients Strategy and its already active Ontario Class VI pricing program. According to the senators, these programs incentivize Canadian processors to use Canadian milk and dairy inputs and penalize them for using imported dairy products.


The U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) and the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) praised the senators for urging an investigation into Canadian dairy pricing policies that have affected trade and stand to negatively affect U.S. dairy farmers and manufacturers, jeopardizing Canada's trade commitment to the U.S.


"We are particularly concerned about reports that, through these types of programs, Canada is moving to target New York and Wisconsin exports of ultra-filtered milk," the senators said in their letter. "Companies from our states inform us that they have already lost considerable export sales as a result of the Ontario dairy policy introduced this past spring."

Study shows benefits of 'livestock friendly designation



More than a decade after Nebraska created its "livestock friendly" designation, participating counties have gained more cattle farms and lost fewer hog farms than those that lack the designation, a new study by agricultural economists at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln showed.


Compared to other counties, livestock-friendly counties experienced higher growth in their number of cattle farms and slower declines in their number of hog farms, the study found. Regression analysis showed that the livestock-friendly designation had a stronger positive correlation to livestock expansion than almost all other factors measured, including the nearby presence of meat packing plants.

NIFA to host animal health stakeholder webinar series


From Oct. 20 to Nov 15, the Division of Animal Systems within the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food & Agriculture's (NIFA), in conjunction with the Agricultural Research Services' (ARS) Animal Health program, will host a series of webinar events to identify, discuss and prioritize the most pressing animal health research needs of its stakeholders.


Each webinar will focus on a different animal industry or crosscutting topics.

The availability of increasingly powerful computers and new technologies provides new business management opportunities in many fields.  In the last few years, most large companies have embraced the concept of "big data" techniques as part of their management strategy.
