Dairy groups lament trade woes ahead of North American Summit
President Barack Obama, Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexico's President Enrique Peña Nieto met in Ottawa, Ont., June 29 for the North American Leaders Summit. "The summit is further recognition of the value of a more integrated North America to advance the security and prosperity of the continent. It also highlights the importance of continuing to strengthen the bilateral and trilateral ties between the United States, Canada and Mexico," the White House said in a statement ahead of the event.
One topic of key importance in the trading relationship between the U.S. and Canada has been Canada's persistent undermining of U.S. dairy export access - a pattern that has cost American dairy farmers and processors hundreds of millions of dollars. Most recently, Canada instituted a new pricing policy at the provincial level that is designed to discourage Canadian processors from using imported dairy products.

Uncertainty high on whether to avoid GMO foods
On the day of a first-of-its-kind law on genetically modified organisms (GMO) labeling scheduled to go into effect on July 1 in Vermont, Americans remain divided on their perceptions of GMO labeling and their use in the food supply, according to the International Food Information Council (IFIC) Foundation's 2016 Food and Health Survey. IFIC has created an interactive map and visual representation of support of GMO labeling, impression of GMO foods, buying GMO groceries and confidence in the food supply safety.
Americans have mixed feelings about the existing GMO labeling policy. Currently, the FDA requires that GMO foods be labeled only if they have substantial differences from their non-GMO counterparts (such as whether there are nutritional differences or potential allergens). Yet there is a lot of buzz about expanding this policy to apply to all GMO foods. Read more

Rabobank: Volatility challenges beef market
The Rabobank global beef index ticked up in the first quarter of 2016 after declining for much of 2015. However, it shows signs of dropping again as softening prices in the U.S. and Canada battle strengthening prices in Australia and Brazil, according to the newly released "Global Beef Quarterly Q2 2016" report from Rabobank. "Volatility is a key theme across most markets at the moment," said Angus Gidley-Baird, senior animal protein analyst at Rabobank. "A range of factors are creating a degree of uncertainty, including the economy and exchange rates influencing Brazil, seasonal conditions impacting Australia, the economy impacting China and market volatility impacting the U.S."
Brazil: Continuing to increase exports
The low value of Brazil's real, high domestic prices and the slow economic conditions will continue to support increased Brazilian beef exports. Exports to China, which reopened in June 2015, totaled more than 70,000 metric tons from January to May, while exports to Saudi Arabia, another new market, were more than 11,000 mt in the first five months of 2016.

FDA Publishes Progress Report on Antibiotic Resistance
On June 30th, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released its fifth Biannual Progress Report on Judicious Use of Antimicrobials in Food-producing Animals. FDA has called on animal drug sponsors of approved medically important antimicrobials administered to food-producing animals through medicated feed or water to remove from their product labels indications for use related to growth promotion, and to bring the remaining therapeutic uses of these products under the oversight of a veterinarian by the end of December 2016. The Progress Report affirms that all of the affected drug sponsors have committed in writing to making the changes described in the guidance by the end of 2016. The report also includes information about FDA's efforts on outreach to industry and efforts to improve data collection. A copy of the Progress Report can be found here.
USDA Launches "One Health" Web Portal
On June 29th, USDA announced the creation of a web-based portal to help stakeholders and the public better access agency information. The page features USDA's collective body of work on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), avian influenza and swine influenza as well as other One Health resources. USDA's One Health approach embraces the idea that a disease problem impacting the health of humans, animals, and the environment can only be solved through improved communication, cooperation, and collaboration across disciplines and institutions. Using this collaborative approach, USDA, with its partners, seeks to maintain or reduce health risks to animals, humans, the environment and society. USDA has also released a One Health Fact Sheet in June to help promote the department's approach.
