Consumers sour on milk exposed to LEDs
Display cases at grocery stores increasingly use light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, and that's bad news for milk drinkers.
Cornell University researchers in the department of food science found that exposure to LED sources for even a few hours degrades the perceived quality of milk more so than the microbial content that naturally accumulates over time. Their study determined that milk remained at high quality for two weeks when shielded from LED exposure, and consumers overwhelmingly preferred the older, shielded milk over fresh milk stored in a typical container that had been exposed to LED lighting for as little as four hours.
As sellers adopt these light-efficient energy sources in dairy cases and point-of-sale locations, merchants might unwittingly sabotage the product they are trying to sell, according to the Cornell news release.
"For some reason, we love to look across the store and see this glowing case of milk that's shining bright," said Robin Dando, senior author on the paper and assistant professor in the Cornell department of food science. "It's attractive to look at, but we might actually be damaging the quality of the product."Read more
Coalition urges rejecting national organic checkoff
A coalition representing more than 6,000 organic farmers from the western, midwestern and eastern U.S. has asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture to reject the Organic Trade Assn.'s (OTA) proposal to establish a national organic checkoff program.
The 2014 farm bill included language that would allow USDA to institute a multi-commodity organic checkoff program, if desired by the industry. However, members of the No Organic Checkoff Coalition, representing 755 signatories, including 25 organic farmer organizations and businesses, said OTA has largely misrepresented organic industry support.
In 2016, OTA has called thousands of certified organic farmers asking them to sign on in support of an organic checkoff. However, during those calls, farmers have not been given the option to register their opposition to the checkoff. Coalition members who have contacted OTA representatives in an effort to record their "no" vote have been strongly persuaded to support the checkoff or have been told that their vote would be recorded as a "maybe," regardless of their consistent opposition. Thus, OTA data submitted to USDA on behalf of the organic industry support are inaccurate.
Scuse leads trade mission to Ukraine, Romania
Leaders from five state departments of agriculture and eight U.S. agribusinesses and organizations will accompany U.S. Department of Agriculture acting deputy Secretary Michael Scuse on a trade mission to Ukraine and Romania June 11-18 to expand export opportunities for U.S. food and agricultural products.
"Both Ukraine and Romania offer potential as markets for U.S. farm and food products," Scuse said. "U.S. exports to Romania have been on the rise and could be further helped by passage of the Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership. In Ukraine, the continuing economic and political transition could likewise lead to new business opportunities. I look forward to joining U.S. agricultural leaders as we seek to enhance our trading relationship with both nations."
Mission participants come from across the U.S. and represent a range of agricultural products and commodities. They will meet with potential customers and host government representatives, forging relationships and learning about the market conditions and business environment in Ukraine and Romania.
International partnership establishes global food waste standard
A partnership of leading international organizations is launching the Food Loss & Waste Accounting & Reporting Standard (FLW Standard) at the Global Green Growth Forum (3GF) 2016 Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark. The FLW Standard is the first-ever set of global definitions and reporting requirements for companies, countries and others to consistently and credibly measure, report on and manage food loss and waste. The standard comes as a growing number of governments, companies and other entities are making commitments to reduce food loss and waste.
"This standard is a real breakthrough. For the first time, armed with the standard, countries and companies will be able to quantify how much food is lost and wasted, where it occurs and report on it in a highly credible and consistent manner," said Andrew Steer, president and chief executive officer of World Resources Institute. "There's simply no reason that so much food should be lost and wasted. Now, we have a powerful new tool that will help governments and businesses save money, protect resources and ensure more people get the food they need."Read more
