Cattle losses reported in Oklahoma, Kansas wildfires
Oklahoma Forestry Services officials said Thursday wildfires in both Kansas and Oklahoma have burned an estimated 397,420 acres total across the two states, but recent reports suggest that the number now exceeds 500,000 acres.
The Kansas Angus Assn. told Feedstuffs that it has received reports of some cattle and horse losses, but the extent of the losses is unknown.
The largest wildfire started March 22 in Woods County, Okla., but has since spread to several counties in Kansas. A new wildfire several counties northeast of the biggest blaze started Thursday in Harvey County, Kan. Also, on Friday morning, the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning - which means conditions are ideal for wildland fire combustion and rapid spread - for western counties in Oklahoma.
Livestock sector has high emission mitigration potential
Scientists have found that the global livestock sector can maintain the economic and social benefits it delivers while significantly reducing emissions and, in doing so, help meet the global mitigation challenge.
The global livestock sector supports about 1.3 billion producers and retailers around the world and is a significant contributor to the global economy, according to the Commonwealth Science & Industry Research Organization (CSIRO) in Australia.
The new analysis, published March 22 in Nature Climate Change, estimates that livestock could account for up to half of the mitigation potential of the global agricultural, forestry and land use sectors, which comprise the second-largest source of emissions globally, after the energy sector.
Toolkit evaluates economic impact of local foods
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack unveiled a new resource created by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Colorado State University that will help communities and businesses evaluate the economic benefits of investing in local food systems. The secretary released details about "The Economics of Local Food Systems: A Toolkit to Guide Community Discussions, Assessments & Choices" in his keynote remarks at the 12th Annual Good Food Festival and Conference in Chicago, Ill.
"Strong local and regional food systems are helping to revitalize rural and urban communities across the country, and more than 160,000 farmers and ranchers nationwide are tapping into growing consumer demand for locally grown products. With USDA support, this sector is increasing access to healthy foods for local residents and creating opportunity for small businesses that store, process, market and distribute food," Vilsack said. "Now, community leaders have a toolkit that can help measure job creation and other economic development indicators, which will help make the case for continued investments."
Wal-Mart selects Indiana for new milk processing plant
Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the nation's largest grocer, announced this week plans to establish a milk processing plant in Ft. Wayne, Ind., providing new opportunities for Indiana's dairy industry and creating more than 200 good-paying jobs - ranging from milk processing to transportation - by the end of 2017.
"Today, Indiana's agriculture industry contributes $31 billion to the state's economy and supports more than 100,000 Hoosier jobs," Indiana Gov. Mike Pence said. "Last year, Walmart opened a 1.2 million squ. ft. distribution center in Plainfield, creating more than 300 jobs, and today, we celebrate 200 more. I'm proud to welcome this expansion as we work to create quality jobs for Hoosiers and support our Indiana farmers."
