U.S. backs FAO efforts to combat animal disease threats

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is backing the U.N. Food & Agriculture Organization's (FAO) efforts to combat pandemic animal disease threats in Asia, Africa and the Middle East with an additional $87 million in funding covering the 2015-19 period.

USAID and FAO have worked in partnership on controlling animal diseases and managing related human health threats for over a decade. USAID financial backing for this work now amounts to $320 million since 2004.

The new funds will support monitoring and surveillance, epidemiological studies, prevention and control activities as well as improving veterinary capacities in Asia, Africa and the Middle East and promoting links between animal health specialists and the public health sector.

WHO says processed meat causes cancer

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization (WHO) today classified bacon, sausages, and other processed meats as cancer causing, joining items like cigarettes, asbestos, and alcohol. Additionally, IARC included the consumption of red meat in a lower risk category of "probably carcinogenic to humans." The decision was made after 22 experts from 10 nations looked at data from both human and animal studies that suggested a correlation. Red meat is the first food that IARC has evaluated for its carcinogenic risk.

IARC said the red meat classification was based on "limited evidence" that the consumption of red meat causes cancer in humans and "strong mechanistic" evidence supporting a carcinogenic effect. The association, according to IARC, was observed mainly for colorectal cancer, but associations were also seen for pancreatic cancer and prostate cancer.

Processed meat, on the other hand, was classified as carcinogenic to humans, based on "sufficient evidence" in humans that the consumption of processed meat causes colorectal cancer. The experts concluded that each 50 gram portion of processed meat eaten daily increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18%.

Natural compounds address gut imbalances

A growing body of evidence suggests that two natural compounds, vitamin D, which is found in dairy products, and xanthohumol, have the ability to address imbalances in gut microbiota that may set the stage for obesity and metabolic syndrome - problems that affect about one out of every three adults in the U.S.

To explore and identify the specific mechanisms by which these compounds have beneficial effects, researchers in the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University have received a new five-year, $2.64 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.

The possible payoff of this research may be an entirely new way to reduce or prevent some of the major diseases that are killing millions of people every year, such as heart disease and type-2 diabetes, according to the researchers.

National Animal Nutrition Program seeks members

The National Animal Nutrition Program (NANP) was established in 2010 as a National Research Support Project (NRSP-9). This program is supported by the Agricultural Experiment Stations and funded with Hatch Funds provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food & Agriculture (NIFA).

For the past five years, NANP has focused on an integrated and systematic approach to sharing, collecting, assembling, synthesizing and disseminating science-based information, educational tools and enabling technologies on nutrient needs of beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine and poultry that facilitate high-priority research across these agricultural species.

USDA transfer research station to Florida A&M University

The U.S. Department of Agriculture marked on Oct. 20 the transfer of more than 3,800 acres of land and facilities that comprised the former Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Subtropical Agricultural & Research Station to Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (Florida A&M).

This is one of the largest single land transfers to one of the 19 historically black land-grant universities established under the Second Morrill Act of 1890.

"A new chapter in the history of this land begins as we transfer from Agricultural Research Service to Florida A&M University," said ARS administrator Chavonda Jacobs-Young. "We look forward to our Florida A&M University colleagues continuing a fine legacy of agricultural research here and teaching the next generation of growers and producers as part of a new Beginning Farmers & Ranchers Program."

Ag research foundation names scientific advisory committee

The Supporters of Agricultural Research (SoAR) Foundation announced the formation of its Scientific Advisory Committee, an eight-member panel led by Vicki Chandler, PhD, dean of the College of Natural Sciences at the Minerva Schools at KGI. The Committee's primary mission is to strengthen agricultural research and raise its profile within the broader science community. Special focus will be placed on the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program, the nation's primary source of competitively awarded funding within the US Department of Agriculture.

"Four reports from the National Academies of Sciences since 1972 have pointed out the need for more and better funding of competitively awarded, peer-reviewed agricultural research," said Chandler, who also sits on the SoAR Foundation's board of directors. "AFRI holds the potential answer to these reports, tapping the brightest minds in the nation's entire research community to generate cutting-edge solutions to the problems confronting agriculture and food production today. Everyone with a stake-from consumers to producers to scientists-needs this program to excel."
