Supplement greatly reduces dairy cow methane emissions
A supplement added to the feed of high-producing dairy cows reduced methane emissions by 30% and could have ramifications for global climate change, according to an international team of researchers. In addition, over the course of the 12-week study conducted at Pennsylvania State University's dairy barns, cows that consumed a feed regimen supplemented by the novel methane inhibitor 3-nitrooxypropanol (3NOP) gained 80% more bodyweight than cows in a control group. Significantly, feed intake, fiber digestibility and milk production by cows that consumed the supplement did not decrease.

Properly manage silage to aid in dairy cow health
Properly manage silage to aid dairy cow healthDESPITE dairy producers' best efforts, sometimes silage will succumb to yeasts, molds and other microbes that cause spoilage. Including this damaged feed at low rates may be tempting, but even small amounts can disrupt the cow's normal rumen function -- and can lead to reproduction problems or impaired cattle health.

Sweet corn could make animal vaccines safer
Animal vaccine manufacturers could benefit from the work of two Purdue University researchers who are testing biomaterial made from sweet corn to make vaccines safer.
Purdue College of Veterinary Medicine professor Harm HogenEsch and Purdue College of Agriculture associate professor Yuan Yao are developing biomaterial from a non-genetically modified variety of sweet corn to use as an adjuvant in animal vaccines. Adjuvants are substances that are added to vaccines to stimulate an immune response and to improve the performance of vaccines.

Idaho 'ag-gag' law found unconstitutional
Idaho's "ag-gag" law which was signed into law in March 2014, was struck down by a district court which said it violates the first and fourteenth amendments. The decision marks the first time a court has declared this type of law unconstitutional. Idaho's law was designed to protect farmers from animal activists seeking to conduct video surveillance, obtain records or gain employment with intent to cause economic harm. The law was the seventh bill of its kind nationally, following up on recent bills passed in Iowa, Utah and Missouri. North Dakota, Montana and Kansas that adopted first generation bills during the 1990-91 legislative session. In 2013, 13 states saw similar introductions, but none were approved.

ADSA DISCOVER Conference on Food Animal Agriculture:
Creating an Enduring U.S. Dairy Production Sector November 2-5, 2015 Eaglewood Resort & Spa in Itasca, IL (near Chicago's O'Hare International Airport) Hosted by the American Dairy Science Association®
Creating an enduring U.S. dairy production sector depends on addressing various economic, environmental, and social issues facing the industry today. Organizations and individuals engage with these challenges and opportunities in U.S. dairy production each biased by their own perspectives. Some emphasize global food security and unprecedented growth in global demand for dairy products. Others call for freezing the environmental footprint of agriculture and preserving wildlife habitat. Still others highlight the need for upholding the rights of those involved in producing and consuming dairy products and the well-being of animals.
Regardless of the viewpoint taken, success for the U.S. dairy sector hinges on its ability to abate threats and capitalize opportunities in a new globalized context. Sustainability is not poorly defined-sustainability is integrative and interdisciplinary in nature.
The goals for this Discover Conference are to provide a cross-section of key discipline experts and a venue for discussion and integration of these issues across animal physiology, nutrition, welfare, climate change, economics and marketing, social issues, and policy, among others. Continued success of the U.S. dairy production sector requires engagement in topics that usually do not surface in dairy production meetings but are essential for improving the US dairy industry and becoming more sustainable and vital for generations to come. Click here for registration and more information.
Early Registration Deadline: October 2, 2015
