Eating eggs, high-fat dairy reduces risk of type 2 diabetes
 
 
In two reports published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, separate groups of European researchers determined that egg consumption and high-fat yogurt and cheese were linked to reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.

 

Egg consumption may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, according to new research from the University of Eastern Finland.

 

According to the University of Eastern Finland, which conducted the egg consumption study, type 2 diabetes is becoming increasingly widespread throughout the world. Research has shown that lifestyle habits, such as exercise and nutrition, play a crucial role in the development of the disease. In some studies, high-cholesterol diets have been associated with disturbances in glucose metabolism and risk of type 2 diabetes.

 

In contrast, in some experimental studies, the consumption of eggs has led to improved glucose balance, among other things. However, there is no experimental data available on the effects of egg consumption on the incidence of type 2 diabetes, the University of Eastern Finland researchers said.

California restricts water use 
 

 
Following the lowest snow pack ever recorded and with no end to the drought in sight, California Gov.  Edmund Brown Jr. announced actions that will save water, increase enforcement to prevent wasteful water use, streamline the state's drought response and invest in new technologies that will make California more drought resilient.

 

Brown issued an executive order which imposes at 25% reduction on the state's 400 local water supply agencies, which serve 90% of California residents, over the coming year.

 

Agricultural water users - which have borne much of the brunt of the drought to date, with hundreds of thousands of fallowed acres, significantly reduced water allocations and thousands of farmworkers laid off - will be required to report more water use information to state regulators, increasing the state's ability to enforce against illegal diversions and waste and unreasonable use of water under the order.

 

It is estimated that between 400,000 and 500,000 acres were not planted last year and 17,000 workers lost their jobs. A significant portion of California's more than 400 commodities already have been impacted by the ongoing drought. Top crops there include almonds, walnuts, grapes, tomatoes, strawberries and nursery plants, in addition to milk and cattle, according to the state's ag department.

Milk could be good for brain health 


 
New research conducted at the University of Kansas Medical Center has found a correlation between milk consumption and the levels of glutathione - a naturally occurring antioxidant - in the brain in older, healthy adults.

 

Dr. In-Young Choi, an associate professor of neurology, and Dr. Debra Sullivan, professor and chair of dietetics and nutrition, worked together on the project. Their research, which was published in the Feb. 3 edition of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggests a new way that drinking milk could benefit the body.

 

"We have long thought of milk as being very important for your bones and very important for your muscles," Sullivan said. "This study suggests that it could be important for your brain as well."

 

Choi's team asked the 60 participants in the study about their diets in the days leading up to brain scans, which they used to monitor levels of glutathione in the brain.

Glyphosate classification concerning 

 
A report by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) advises reclassifying the herbicide glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen - drawing criticism from agricultural groups.

 

IARC is the France-based cancer research arm of the U.N. World Health Organization (WHO) that coordinates and conducts both epidemiological and laboratory research into causes of human cancer.

 

IARC made its conclusion on a review of limited data during a meeting that lasted only one week, the National Corn Growers Assn. (NCGA) said in a statement. This stands in stark contrast to the regulatory review process for products such as glyphosate that take a comprehensive look at all available data over an extended period of time.

 

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which has regulatory authority over glyphosate approval in the U.S., has extensively reviewed this product and continues to reassess the data on a regular basis. EPA assigned glyphosate to the lowest category E, indicating that it does not pose a cancer risk to people.

New York Brings Together Tomorrow's Dairy Leaders


Liverpool, NY, April 1, 2015 - More than 285 students will participate in the Dairy Challenge and complementary Dairy Challenge Academy in Liverpool, NY, April 9-11, 2015. Students will come from 40 colleges from across the U.S. and two Canadian provinces to put their textbook knowledge to work by evaluating a dairy operation and developing recommendations to optimize success and animal care.

 North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge (NAIDC) is funded through the generous support of 120 agribusinesses and dairy farms. Dairy Challenge was started 14 years ago through cooperation between universities, dairy producers and agribusinesses. The event expanded in 2013 with the Dairy Challenge Academy, providing hands-on learning where teams of students evaluate a dairy operation with the help of dairy industry professionals serving as Academy Advisors.

 This year about 130 students will compete in the national contest and 155 students will participate in the Academy. Between the national contest and Academy, collegiate participants will visit six dairy farms in the surrounding Syracuse area.

 The event in April is hosted by the Northeast Dairy Challenge committee, a group of agribusiness professionals and university personnel. Each year, the Northeast committee also coordinates a regional Dairy Challenge. The national event will be hosted in 2015 and 2016 in Liverpool, NY, giving the Northeast an opportunity to showcase New York's thriving dairy industry.  "We are excited to have students and industry professionals from across the U.S. join us in New York to see what the dairy industry in the northeast has to offer," said Barry Putnam of Cargill Animal Nutrition and the Northeast Dairy Challenge committee.

Contest participants will inspect an operating dairy farm, analyze farm data and ask questions of farm owners. Then each team develops recommendations, which will be presented to farm owners and a panel of five judges. At a concluding banquet, eight college teams will be announced as award winners, meaning their recommendations most closely match those of the official judges.

In addition to the national competition and Academy, students will also participate in other educational and networking activities such as interactive stations on a tour farm, participation in panel discussions with young dairy producers and dairy processors, presentations on cutting-edge research and industry trends, and interaction with agribusinesses in a career fair.
