NBAF construction projected for May 
 
 
May will likely mark the start of the five-year construction to build the National Bio & Agro-defense Facility (NBAF), according to an announcement from Kansas State University.

 

On March 3, Congress passed a bill that included the remaining $300 million to complete the $1.25 billion premier animal disease research laboratory. Construction on the lab's central utility plant has been under way since 2013 and is about 90% complete.

 

The federal research lab will be on the northeast edge of Kansas State University's Manhattan, Kan., campus.

 

"NBAF is needed to confront foreign animal diseases that threaten America's agricultural economy and food supply," said Ron Trewyn, the university's NBAF liaison. "Building this lab is long overdue."

 

Construction of the lab will begin in May, with construction efforts projected to peak in 2018 and 2019 when more than 875 construction personnel will be on site each day for several weeks. Lab construction is slated for completion in December 2020, but will likely take two years or more after that before NBAF is fully operational.

McDonald's updates menu sourcing policy 
 

McDonald's USA announced last week that it will buy only chickens raised without antibiotics that are important to human medicine and will serve milk from cows not treated with recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) in the latest step of the company's journey to evolve its menu to better meet the changing preferences of today's customers.

 

"Our customers want food that they feel great about eating - all the way from the farm to the restaurant - and these moves take a step toward better delivering on those expectations," said Mike Andres, McDonald's USA president.

 

In an effort to reduce the use of antibiotics in its poultry supply and building on the company's 2003 global antibiotics policy, McDonald's introduced a new policy - "Global Vision for Antimicrobial Stewardship in Food Animals" - and added it to the list of new menu sourcing initiatives.

 

So, under this newest sourcing policy, McDonald's will purchase all of the chicken served at its approximately 14,000 U.S. restaurants from U.S. farms that raise chickens without antibiotics important to human medicine, and this will be implemented throughout the supply chain within the next two years.

School lunch flexibility sought
 
 
New school lunch regulations took effect in 2012 and have received a mixed bag of support from school nutrition professionals, parents and members of Congress.

 

As Congress gears up to reauthorize child nutrition programs this year, claims are already being staked on what should be included.

 

Speaking to school officials at the School Nutrition Assn. (SNA) Legislative Action Conference, Senate Agriculture Committee chairman Pat Roberts (R., Kan.), who will lead the Senate's work on reauthorizing the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act this year, said it's important to "find a way to bring folks together and have a big-picture discussion on how to retain the great advancements schools have made and to allow other districts to meet the challenges."

 

SNA, which represents more than 55,000 professionals who prepare school food, said during this year's reauthorization, Congress has the opportunity to protect school meal programs and help students adjust to and accept healthy changes in the cafeteria.

Beef prices scaling to new highs

 

Beef prices scaling to new highsONCE again, retail beef prices in January reached a fresh new level, averaging $6/lb. and setting records in 11 of the last 13 months.

 

The most impressive record-setter was Choice beef, at $6.33/lb., climbing 2.3 cents from the previous month and 98.7 cents from a year ago.

 

Ground beef followed suit and also reached an all-time high of $4.33/lb. in January.

 

Meanwhile, retail pork prices trended slightly lower in January, while chicken prices held firm, creating a price advantage over beef.

 

At the retail level, the average price of pork was $3.989/lb., down 0.2 cents from the month before but 23.1 cents higher than January 2013.

Good News from FDA
The long awaited report on FDA's 2012 milk sampling survey provided good news for both consumers and dairy producers.  Our system is working to provide consumers with a safe and nutritious food supply.  It helps to affirm that when producers need to use antibiotic to care for the health of their animals, they are used in a responsible manner. Coupled with the FDA's National Milk Drug Residue Database Fiscal Year 2014 report, released Feb. 12 that found no animal drug residue in dairy products headed for sale, consumers and producers can feel positive about milk and dairy products. While both reports are "good news" producers, veterinarians, scientists and regulators will continue to work to do even better in the future. FDA's Survey of Milk Finds Few Drug Residues
 
March 5, 2015 - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced results from its milk sampling survey, involving the testing of nearly 2,000 dairy farms for drug residues in milk. More than 99 percent of the samples are free of drug residues of concern-- underscoring the safety of the US milk supply. These findings provide evidence that the nation's milk safety system is effective in helping to prevent drug residues of concern in milk, even in those limited instances when medications are needed to maintain the health of dairy cattle.

The agency initiated the study to determine whether dairy farms with previous drug residue violations in tissue derived from dairy cows were more likely to have violative drug residues in milk than other dairy farms. The FDA tested samples from two groups: a "targeted" list of farms with known previous tissue residue violations and a control group of farms. Results show that the occurrence of drug residues in milk is very low, even in the targeted group. However, the limited number of residues detected involved drugs that are not included in routine testing under the current milk safety program.

Despite the finding of a small number of drug residues in samples collected, the FDA intends to take steps to maintain the strongest possible system to ensure milk safety. The FDA will work closely with state regulators to consider modifying testing to include collecting samples as necessary from milk tanks on farms when investigating illegal drug residues in tissues involving culled dairy cows. The agency is also working with its milk regulatory partners to update the existing milk safety program, as necessary, to include testing for a greater diversity of drugs and to educate dairy producers on best practices to avoid drug residues in both tissues and milk.
