Antibiotics, bacteria found in feedlot dust

After testing dust in the air near cattle feedlots in the Southern High Plains, researchers at The Institute of Environmental & Human Health at Texas Tech University found evidence of antibiotics, feedlot-derived bacteria and DNA sequences that encode for antibiotic resistance.

The study was published online Jan. 22 in the National Institutes of Environmental Science's peer-reviewed journal, Environmental Health Perspectives. The research was funded through a grant from Texas Tech's College of Arts & Sciences. It is the first study documenting aerial transmission of antibiotic resistance from an open-air farm setting.

Phil Smith, an associate professor of terrestrial ecotoxicology at the institute, noted that while scientists couldn't assess if the amounts of these materials were dangerous to human health, it helped explain a previously uncharacterized pathway by which antibiotic-resistant bacteria could travel long distances into places inhabited by humans.

Milk comparisons not so straigthforward

Consumers perceive that organic cow's milk differs from conventionally produced milk and that these differences justify the premium price of organic milk.

In a review published in the Journal of Dairy Science, researchers in New Zealand found that the differences between organic and conventional milk are not so straightforward.

Reviewing almost 200 publications, the researchers concluded that previously conducted controlled studies investigating whether differences exist between organic and conventionally produced milk have so far been largely ambiguous, due principally to the complexity of the research question and the number of factors and variables that can influence milk composition.

"This review presents one of the most detailed treatises to date of organic versus conventional milk composition," said Dr. Matt Lucy, a professor of animal science at the University of Missouri and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Dairy Science.

Evaluating the economics of climate risk for Midwest ag

Extreme weather events could become the "new norm" for Midwest region if the U.S. stays on its current greenhouse gas emission pathway, according to a risk-assessment analysis report released by the Risky Business Project.

Heat in the Heartland: Climate Change and Economic Risk in the Midwest details how the impact of changing climate could possible disrupt the Midwest's agriculture economy.

"A changing climate will present new risks and new opportunities as we face the complex task of producing enough food, feed and fuel for a world on its way to 9 billion people. Given the importance of the Midwestern United States to the world's agricultural production, it would be irresponsible to dismiss these projections lightly," said Greg Page, Cargill executive chairman and Risky Business Project Risk Committee member.

The report shows that communities, industries, and properties across the region face profound risks from climate change. These impacts could affect transportation, labor productivity, energy use and agriculture. However, the report concludes that the most severe risks can still be avoided through early investments in resilience, and through immediate action to reduce the pollution that causes global warming.

Census of ag data shows ag leaders

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released its analysis of statistics from the 2012 Census of Agriculture as they relate to Congressional districts, and Nebraska's third Congressional district which encompasses the western three-fourths of the state marked the top of the list with 54,806 total farm operators and 35,850 farms.

Oklahoma had two districts in the top 10, as well as Missouri's sixth and fourth Congressional district at tenth and eleventh, respectively.

When it comes to who owns farms, the census revealed that Montana's At Large district has a total of 3,509 farms declared as corporations and 2,320 as partnerships and Iowa's third district which covers the southwest portion of the state roughly from Des Moines to the Nebraska and Missouri border follows ranking second in corporations with a total of 3,282 farms and Nebraska's first district with 2,857.

Family or individual operations make up 30,272 in Nebraska's third district, followed by the western side of Minnesota in its seventh district with 29,025.

The notion that the majority of government payments goes to southern producers doesn't match up with reality, as North Dakota's at large congressional district ranked first in the total number of government payments received at a total of $381,710,000 for 24,790 farms, followed by Iowa's fourth congressional district which covers the northwest part of the state of $321,228,000 for 27,425 farms.

Would you like to help the animal and dairy science
community and attend JAM 2015 for free?

Referrals are the most tried-and-true way businesses grow, and the same is true for the Federation of Animal Science Societies (FASS). Do you know a colleague working with an animal science group that is in need of high-quality, cost-effective support services? Help them out by referring them to Jamie Ritter, FASS Executive Director at jamier@assochq.org .

Help them benefit from the shared resource concept and the 264 years of collective experience the FASS staff have in working with non-profit animal science organizations. If your referral becomes a FASS customer prior to July 1, 2015, ADSA will comp your registration to the 2015 JAM. It's win-win-win. For more information about services offered by FASS, click here.

ADSA is a founding member of FASS.
