Texas Tech researcher discovers new salmonella serotype


Lubbock, Texas, is known for many things, like being the home of Buddy Holly and dust storms, but now it can also claim a breakthrough in biological sciences.


Marie Bugarel, a research assistant professor at Texas Tech University's department of animal and food sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources, has discovered a new serotype of the salmonella bacteria. The new serotype was confirmed by the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France, the international reference center for salmonella.


Because convention calls for a new serotype to be named after the city in which it is discovered, this one will be called Salmonella Lubbock (officially Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica Lubbock).


"More important than the name, however, is that this discovery illustrates there is more that needs to be discovered about salmonella and how it interacts with cattle populations," said Guy Loneragan, a professor of food safety and public health who, along with Kendra Nightingale, are Bugarel's mentors at Texas Tech. "With this understanding will come awareness of how to intervene to break the ecological cycle and reduce salmonella in animals and in beef, pork and chicken products."

Researchers to trace 'superbug' genes  


 
Researchers at Colorado State University are investigating the weighty topic of antibiotic resistance - an issue with ramifications for global food safety and public health - by tracking the genetic footprints of drug-resistant bacteria.

 

They want to determine where infectious organisms originate and how they move through the food system and environment to people. The study, funded with $2.25 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is one of the largest of its kind and is enabled by recent advances in DNA sequencing technology.

 

The project is expected to provide insights about the factious topic of antibiotic use in food animals, chiefly beef and dairy cattle, and the degree to which the longstanding agricultural practice contributes to development of "superbugs" that infect people whose illnesses are difficult and expensive to treat.

 

"Antimicrobial resistance is one of the most significant grand challenges to human animal and food safety," said Alan Rudolph, Colorado State vice president for research.

Studying respiratory illness in dairy workers 

 
Dairy workers are at a heightened risk of developing respiratory ailments because of particles inhaled on the job, and a group of Colorado State University researchers is using a federal grant of nearly $1 million to help find ways to protect their heath.

 

Colorado's dairy industry grew by about 20% between 2007 and 2012, when the state's 131,000 milk cows produced more than 3.2 billion lb. of milk, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The number of dairy workers in the state in 2012 - the most recent year for which USDA figures are available - totaled nearly 3,000, mostly in northeastern Colorado.

 

With the increasing size of the Colorado dairy industry, the High Plains Intermountain Center for Agricultural Health & Safety (HICAHS) at Colorado State is leading the research project to examining the reasons why dairy workers are more susceptible to asthma, chronic bronchitis and decreased lung function and what can be done to decrease the risk.

No pork for some Chipotle customers 
 
 
After routine audit of its suppliers, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. suspended pork purchased from one of its major supplier.


Chris Arnold, Chipotle communication director, told Feedstuffs "The standards for all of our responsibly raised meats are very high, but the differences in animal welfare are greatest with pork. Given these stark differences, serving pork from conventionally raised pigs is not an option to us."

 

Further he added, "Our Responsibly Raised pork comes from pigs that are raised with outdoor access or in deeply bedded pens, and without the use of antibiotics. Conventionally raised pigs generally do not have access to the outdoors, spend their lives in densely crowded buildings, live on hard slatted floors with no bedding and no ability to root, and are given antibiotics to keep them from getting sick. We would rather not serve pork at all, than serve pork from animals that are raised in this way."

 

The company would not release the name of the supplier not in compliance.

JAM 2015 Call for Abstracts Reminder and Housing Information

The abstract submission site for JAM 2015 is open! To submit your abstract visit http://www.jtmtg.org/JAM/2015/call.asp. Submission instructions, quality standards, answers to frequently asked questions, and student competition guidelines are available on the page. The deadline for abstract submission is March 3, 2015, at 11:59 pm (Central Time). In addition, the JAM housing page is now open: simply click on the Hotel Information tab on the JAM website to make your reservation online.

The JAM 2015 scientific program will feature 2,200 oral and poster presentations from around the globe. Make sure yours is included, as 3,500 scientists from 50 countries meet in Orlando. Topics include animal health and well-being, dairy food science, dairy production, animal and human nutrition, livestock transport, food safety, and production and management.
