GAO urges collaborative food safety plan

The fragmented food safety system is nothing new, split between the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, but according to a new Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, more needs to be done to improve planning and collaboration between the two agencies.

The GAO report gives examples of fragmentation in federal food safety oversight, including the 2010 nationwide recall of more than 500 million eggs because of salmonella contamination.

The Food & Drug Administration is generally responsible for ensuring that shell eggs are safe, wholesome and properly labeled, while USDA's Food Safety & Inspection Service (FSIS) is responsible for the safety of eggs processed into egg products.

USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service sets quality and grade standards for shell eggs but does not test the eggs for bacteria such as salmonella.

Chart-busting year for livestock

Calendar year 2014 will go down in the history books as a chart-busting year for the entire livestock complex. A rare combination of circumstances sent the livestock, poultry and dairy markets to fresh new highs.

Previous years of high feed costs, diseases and drought took their toll on U.S. meat supplies and fueled prices to shatter new records for both the hog and cattle markets.

Further, chicken and turkey prices were exceptional in 2014 and held at nearly record prices. Egg prices also topped previous records at the end of November.

Dairy producers enjoyed new price peaks, with the all-milk price sailing past $23/cwt., butter reaching $3.00/lb., cheese barrels at $2.60/lb. and cheese blocks at $2.42/lb.

Lilly completes Novartis Animal Health buy

Eli Lilly & Co. announced Jan. 1 that it has completed the acquisition of Novartis Animal Health, which will further position Lilly's Elanco as a global leader in the animal health industry.

The transaction, first announced on April 22, has received clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act. As part of the approval, certain animal health assets in the U.S. relating to the Sentinel canine parasiticide franchise will be divested to Virbac, as has been previously announced. All other closing conditions have also been met.

The combined organization will increase Elanco's product portfolio, expand its global commercial presence and deliver more innovation to customers, the announcement said. The acquisition also augments Elanco's manufacturing and research and development (R&D) capabilities with a total of 17 manufacturing sites and 14 R&D locations in the newly combined organization.

Study examines phospholipid content in various milk types

A  comparison of the phospholipid content of conventional milk with that of organic milk and milk rich in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has shown relative differences, as well as some similarities, between all three type of milk. The work was conducted by T. Ferreiro, L. Gayoso, J.L. Rodríguez-Otero of the Instituto de Investigación y Análisis de Alimentos in Spain.

The membrane enclosing the fat globules of milk is composed, in part, of phospholipids, which have properties of interest for the development of so-called functional foods and technologically novel ingredients. They include phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylserine (PS), and the sphingophospholipid sphingomyelin (SM).

Milk from organically managed cows contains higher levels of vitamins, antioxidants and unsaturated fatty acids than conventionally produced milk, but no work had been done in regard to an analogous comparisons of major phospholipid contents.

Help the animal and dairy science community and attend JAM 2015 for free, too!

Referrals are the most tried-and-true way businesses grow, and the same is true for the Federation of Animal Science Societies (FASS). Do you know a colleague working with an animal science group that is in need of high-quality, cost-effective support services? Help them out by referring them to Jamie Ritter, FASS Executive Director at jamier@assochq.org .

Help them benefit from the shared resource concept and the 264 years of collective experience the FASS staff have in working with non-profit animal science organizations. If your referral becomes a FASS customer prior to July 1, 2015, ADSA will comp your registration to the 2015 JAM. It's win-win-win. For more information about services offered by FASS, click here.
