Buffer zones may be inadequate around feedlots

The pathogen Escherichia coli O157:H7 can spread, likely airborne, more than one-tenth mile downwind from a cattle feedlot onto nearby produce, according to a paper published ahead of print in Applied & Environmental Microbiology.

"The high percentages of leafy greens contaminated with E. coli suggest great risk for planting fresh produce 180 m (590 ft.) or less from a feedlot," the investigators wrote, suggesting that current buffer zone guidelines of 120 m (400 ft.) from a feedlot may be inadequate.

This is the first comprehensive and long-term study of its kind, said first author Elaine D. Berry of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center, Neb.

In the study, the investigators sampled leafy greens growing in nine plots; three each at 60, 120 and 180 m downwind from the cattle feedlot at the research center, over a two year period. The rate of contamination with the pathogenic E. coli O157:H7 declined with distance from an average of 3.5% of samples per plot at 60 m to 1.8% at 180 m.

New forage index aids in dairy ration formulation

Well-designed dairy rations contain forage to maximize rumen function without severely compromising intake. In a recent article, we presented "NDFu30" as a predictor of gut fill (Feedstuffs, July 21), relating the undigested neutral detergent fiber (NDF) pool size to dry matter (DM) intake.

As early as 1966, Conrad (1966) theorized that dry matter digestibility regulated DM intake. In a 2010 paper presented at the Cornell Nutrition Conference, Mertens (2010) discussed "Combining the Mechanisms of Intake Regulation Using a Common Feed Characteristic," summarizing earlier work relating dry matter digestibility (DMD) to the following linear equation: DMD = 87.1 - (0.98 - NDF digestibility) * NDF.

We have further reduced this equation to demonstrate that DM disappearance is a linear function of undigested NDF quantity: DMD = 87.1 - NDFu.

Global beef supplies remain tight amid robust consumer demand

Rabobank has issued a new report on the global beef industry, looking at continued tight global supply of cattle and beef in Q4-2014.

In the report, published by Rabobank's Food & Agribusiness Research and Advisory group, Rabobank said that despite tight global cattle and beef supplies, prices tempered from their Q3 highs. The U.S. remains the major global driver, with import demand affecting prices and volumes for other countries.

Furthermore, Rabobank said that a big question heading into 2015 with such a finely balanced market is: if Australian export rates decrease and herds in Mexico and Canada continue to be run down by the U.S., have prices reached a new norm or do they still have room to rise?

"The U.S. continues to be the driver in the global beef market with constrained supply and strong demand keeping prices high.  A recent strengthening in the U.S. economy and dollar will support continued imports to the U.S., however we are watching a drop in the oil price and depreciation of the Russian ruble given Russia's status as the world's largest beef importer," explained Rabobank analyst Angus Gidley-Baird.

Vaccination possible against CWD in deer

Researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center and elsewhere say that a vaccination they have developed to fight a brain wasting syndrome in deer and other animals may hold promise on two additional fronts: protecting U.S. livestock from contracting the disease, and preventing similar brain infections in humans.

The study, published online in Vaccine Dec. 21, documents a scientific milestone: the first successful vaccination of deer against chronic wasting disease (CWD), a fatal brain disorder caused by unusual infectious proteins known as prions. Prions propagate by converting otherwise healthy proteins into a disease state.

Equally important, the researchers said, this study may hold promise against human diseases suspected of being caused by prion infections, such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, kuru, familial insomnia and variably protease-sensitive prionopathy. Some studies also have associated prion-like infections with Alzheimer's disease.

Are You Part of ADSA on Linked In

Our ADSA Linked In group continues to grow. We currently have 1,126 members from around the world, are you one of them? It's a great place to network with other dairy professionals from around the world.  Check it out here.

Help the animal and dairy science community and attend JAM 2015 for free, too!

Referrals are the most tried-and-true way businesses grow, and the same is true for the Federation of Animal Science Societies (FASS). Do you know a colleague working with an animal science group that is in need of high-quality, cost-effective support services? Help them out by referring them to Jamie Ritter, FASS Executive Director at [email protected] .

Help them benefit from the shared resource concept and the 264 years of collective experience the FASS staff have in working with non-profit animal science organizations.

If your referral becomes a FASS customer prior to July 1, 2015, ADSA will comp your registration to the 2015 JAM. It's win-win-win. For more information about services offered by FASS, click here.

The Secretary's Advisory Committee on Animal Health

USDA APHIS is seeking nominations for the next term of the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Animal Health ("Committee") to serve 2015 - 2017. Nomination packages-an Application for Committee Membership (AD-755) and resume-must be submitted by January 20, 2015 to be considered.

The Committee advises the Secretary of Agriculture on strategies, policies, and programs that prevent, control, or eradicate animal diseases. The Committee considers agricultural initiatives of national scope and significance and advises on matters of public health, conservation of national resources, stability of livestock economies, livestock disease management and traceability strategies, prioritizing animal health imperatives, and other related aspects of agriculture. Twenty members will be appointed to the Committee for 2-year terms to represent a broad range of farmers, ranchers, scientists, trade associations, universities, Tribal and State Animal Health Officials, and other groups within agriculture. The terms of the current Committee members expire in May 2015. Newly appointed members will meet sometime during FY2016. The USDA reimburses members for all costs associated with official Committee travel. The time commitment will vary depending on the particular topics and areas of animal health that may be explored. For more information regarding the Committee, past meetings, records, and more, please visit the SACAH Website.

To ensure that Committee recommendations take into account the needs of the diverse groups served by the USDA (from research and production to trade, markets, use, and consumption), the USDA will vet all candidates applying for membership. Diversity objectives will be considered-geographic, points-of-view, and otherwise-in order to achieve a balance of perspectives. Applicants must clear all stages of the vetting process which begins with a comprehensive review of personal and professional backgrounds, affiliations and associations, lobbyist status, prior involvement with USDA, and service on other federal boards or advisory committees. Full nomination packages with completed AD 755 background information forms and resumes must be submitted no later than January 20, 2015. Final selection of members will be made by the Secretary from nominations submitted. All nomination materials should be mailed in a single, complete package to:

Mrs. R.J. Cabrera, Designated Federal Officer

USDA APHIS Veterinary Services

4700 River Road Unit 34

Riverdale, MD 20737-1231

(Email inquiries may be sent to: [email protected]).

Cover letters should be addressed to Thomas Vilsack, Secretary, U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1400 Independence Avenue SW, Washington, DC, 20250, Attn:  Secretary's Advisory Committee on Animal Health.

USDA has special interest in assuring that women, minority groups, veterans, and the physically disabled are adequately represented on these advisory committees. Nominations of these candidates are welcomed and encouraged. The AD-755 form may also be found on the USDA Advisory Committee website (www. usda.gov/advisory_committees.xml).
