Dairy industry praises talks with China on cheese name issue


The U.S. dairy industry applauded late Friday a commitment to stronger protections for common food names resulting from just-concluded trade talks with China.


The favorable outcome of the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade meetings should facilitate export of products like feta and parmesan cheese to China, which is a particularly large and fast-growing market for U.S. dairy products.


"We are extremely pleased that the United States and China have agreed to strong protections for products using these well-established cheese names as we seek to expand exports to this key market," said Tom Suber, president of the U.S. Dairy Export Council.


"We especially appreciate U.S. negotiators' recognition of the importance of common name preservation to U.S. exports and the heightened focus that the Obama Administration has given to a key dairy industry priority," said Jim Mulhern, president and CEO of the National Milk Producers Federation.

Correction to FY 2015 ARS appropriations  


Last week's edition of Dair-e-news incorrectly noted that the funding for the Agricultural Research Service in FY 2014 was $1.154 billion.  The article should have stated that funding for ARS in FY 2014 was $1.122 billion.  For FY 2015, ARS will receive $132, reflecting a $10 million increase.  However, this increase is somewhat deceiving.  In the past, funding for agency rents and leases was provided through a separate central account.  The FY 2015 budget decentralizes the process and these expenses are now incorporated into individual agency budgets.  This change is true for other USDA agencies, as well.  

Vilsack abandons second beef checkoff 

 
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack scrapped a proposal to establish another beef checkoff on top of the existing beef checkoff program. The new checkoff would have functioned under the Commodity Promotion, Research and Information Act of 1996 alongside of the current $1 assessment established in 1985.


"The beef industry agrees that more resources are needed for research and promotion, but for the last several years the industry was unable to agree how best to do that. The proposal for a second checkoff program was designed to help the industry achieve its goal. However, as the appropriations bill Congress passed directed the Department not to implement a second beef checkoff program, USDA will no longer pursue that solution," a U.S. Department of Agriculture spokesman said to Feedstuffs in an email.


"USDA encourages the beef industry to work together to determine ways to secure more resources for the beef checkoff program so that it can continue to support cattle ranchers around the country," the spokesman added.

DuPont Pioneer to sell alfalfa research, assets to S&W Seed


 
DuPont Pioneer and S&W Seed Company announced Dec. 19 an agreement for S&W Seed Co. to acquire DuPont Pioneer alfalfa germplasm, as well as alfalfa production and research facility assets for a purchase price of up to $49 million over a period of several years. The first portion of the sale is expected to be completed on Dec. 31, 2014, pending conditions to close, including financing.


Under the agreement, DuPont Pioneer will continue to sell Pioneer brand alfalfa varieties to customers globally.


"This agreement is another step in the execution of our DuPont Pioneer business growth strategy," said Paul E. Schickler, president, DuPont Pioneer. "The agreement further enhances our focus on innovative new offerings that drive profitable growth both today and over the long term."


As part of the transaction, S&W Seed will acquire DuPont Pioneer alfalfa assets at DuPont Pioneer locations in Nampa, Idaho, and Arlington, Wis., and will extend offers of employment to alfalfa research and production employees.

JAM 2015 Updates

When making your travel plans for the 2015 JAM, check the meeting home page to see what is new this year, especially the Sunday and pre-meeting events. The list of approved Symposia and Workshops is now available and the schedule for these events will be published on or about Dec 22nd.

Also REMEMBER the 2015 Interbull Annual Meeting will take place July 9-12, 2015, at the Rosen Shingle Creek in Orlando, Florida, on the four days leading up to the start of the 2015 ADSA®-ASAS Joint Annual Meeting (JAM). The Interbull morning and afternoon sessions on Sunday, July 12, will be held jointly with JAM. All JAM attendees are invited to attend the Sunday Interbull-JAM Joint sessions at no cost, but must reserve a seat when registering for JAM (ticketed item: Sunday Interbull-JAM Joint Session, Registration Fee = $0). ADSA® asks, Did You Know That
the Journal of Dairy Science® (JDS), one of our most visible member benefits is the top-ranked dairy research journal in the world. In 2013, JDS was ranked by Thomson Reuters' Journal Citation Reports® as number 3 of 54 journals in the Agriculture, Dairy, and Animal Science category, with an Impact Factor of 2.566 (2012 data) and no. 1 by Eigenfactor (which removes self-citations). JDS is also number 1 in the category by the five-year Impact Factor, with a score of 3.009. The journal has now ranked in the top five of the Agriculture, Dairy and Animal Science category for twelve straight years. The journal is also highly ranked in the Food Science and Technology category (21st of 124 journals for Impact Factor and 19th of 124 journals for five-year Impact Factor). 


Members publishing in JDS receive a significant savings on page charges.  The current charge for members is $85 per printed page. If no authors are ADSA members, the publication charge is $140 per journal page.  The savings from just two (2) pages covers the cost of professional membership.  Under the new open access (OA) policy, authors may choose to pay the OA fee in lieu of standard page charges when author proofs are returned so that their paper becomes freely available upon publication in an online issue. The OA fee is $1750 if at least one author is a professional member of ADSA or $3500 if no authors are ADSA members. Open access articles will be freely accessible through the journal's web site (http://www.journalofdairyscience.org/) at the time of publication. All other (non-OA) articles are freely available on www.journalofdairyscience.org/ 12 months after publication.
