USDA extends dairy program sign-up

U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that the application deadline for the dairy Margin Protection Program (MPP) will be extended until Dec. 19, 2014. The program, established by the 2014 Farm Bill, protects participating dairy producers when the margin - the difference between the price of milk and feed costs - falls below levels of protection selected by the applicant.

"The 2014 Farm Bill created these safety net programs to provide safeguards against the uncertainty of weather and markets, but this safety net is not automatic. Producers must visit their local Farm Service Agency office to enroll before December 19," said Vilsack. "Despite the best forecasts, weather and markets can change, so a modest investment today can protect against unexpected losses tomorrow."

Local food initiatives get boost

The push for local foods received a big push in recent days in a series of different announcements from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the White House.

Local farmers, food businesses, and schools from 82 farm to school projects across the country received a boost with the announcement of over $5 million in funding from the Farm to School Grant Program by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack. These grant awards will serve more than 13,000 schools and 2.8 million students located in 42 states plus the U.S. Virgin Islands, helping meet the growing demand by schools for locally-sourced foods, improving child nutrition, increasing food and agricultural literacy, and growing marketing opportunities for local farmers and food businesses.

New for the current FY 2015 round of grants was an additional grant category for funding conferences, trainings, and events to support the development of supply chain relationships connecting local producers to school food buyers, as well as for providing technical assistance for local procurement, food safety, culinary education, and integration of agriculture-based curriculum.

Cargill enters agreement on beef sustainability assessment

Cargill Cattle Feeders, LLC, the cattle supply arm of the company's U.S. beef business, has entered into an agreement with Wichita-based consultancy Kennedy and Coe, LLC, in a joint effort to create a verified beef supply chain sustainability assessment program for Cargill feed yards.  Kennedy and Coe will leverage its extensive beef-industry and sustainability expertise and unique ResourceMax assessment service developed by the company's Vela Environmental division.

Based on the successful development of benchmarking and measurement criteria, this type of assessment could eventually be expanded to include cattle production in collaboration with stocker operators, ranchers, as well as with Cargill's strategic feed yard partners.

"As global demand for animal proteins to nourish people continues to rise in concert with increasing population and consumer income levels, it is important to improve the way we use resources to produce beef," said John Keating, president of Cargill's North American beef business.  "As a leading beef producer, we believe it is critical to improve the way we manage resources, and we will develop a way to measure the effective use of inputs and outputs ranging from water and feed, to worker safety, manure management, air quality, energy use, land stewardship and animal welfare.  We believe this is a step in the right direction that complements our overall focus on sustainable supply chains and will also benefit our customers."

Church & Dwight to acquire VI-COR

Church & Dwight announced Dec. 3 that it has signed an agreement to acquire the assets of Varied Industries Corp. (VI-COR), a Mason City, Iowa-based manufacturer and seller of feed ingredients for dairy cows, beef cattle, poultry and other livestock.

The VI-COR products are yeast-based feed ingredients for improving livestock digestive health and performance that will complement Church & Dwight's existing dairy nutrition business, the announcement said.

According to Church & Dwight, this agreement meets its acquisition criteria in that the respective brands are leaders in their categories, the business has growth potential and the transaction is expected to be gross margin accretive to the company. Annual sales of these brands are approximately $25 million.

Efforts to Develop a Unified Message on Agriculture Research Announced
On December 5th, the Charles Valentine Riley Memorial Foundation (RMF) sponsored an event at the National Press Club in Washington, DC to discuss efforts to develop a unified message for agriculture, food and natural resource science.  FASS Washington Representative Lowell Randel, serves as a member of the RMF board of directors and presided over the event.  During the event, Wendy Wintersteen, Dean of the College of Agriculture at Iowa State University highlighted the results of a report entitled "Pursuing a Unifying Message: Elevating Food, Agricultural and Natural Resources Research as a National Priority".

The report The report documents that the U.S. is in danger of losing its prominence in the scientific research upon which our food, agriculture, and natural resources systems depend and presents a case for many organizations working together toward a common goal at a time when global challenges require additional investment in agricultural research.  Former Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman moderated a response panel that further discussed key issues impacting support for agricultural science.  There was strong consensus around the need to build a broad based coalition and develop and market a unified message to increase the investment in agriculture research.  More information on the effort and a copy of the report can be found here.

Referrals are the most tried-and-true way businesses grow, and the same is true for the Federation of Animal Science Societies (FASS). Do you know a colleague working with an animal science group that is in need of high-quality, cost-effective support services? Help them out by referring them to Jamie Ritter, FASS Executive Director at [email protected] .

Help them benefit from the shared resource concept and the 264 years of collective experience the FASS staff have in working with non-profit animal science organizations.
