FDA asked to increase antibiotic data collection

Senators Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.), Tom Harkin (D., Iowa), Kirsten Gillibrand (D., N.Y.) and Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) urged the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue a rule to increase data collection on the use of medically important antibiotics in agriculture and to work with veterinarians and industry to develop a plan to collect data on how antibiotics are used on farms.

Currently, FDA does not have a complete picture of antibiotic use in agriculture, the senators stated. For example, data collected do not allow public health agencies to study trends in the use of antibiotics in different food-producing animal species.

Improving data collection on antibiotic sales and distribution would allow FDA to begin to estimate species-specific antibiotic use. Such data would also assist in evaluating the effectiveness of FDA's judicious antibiotic use policy as well as President Obama's National Strategy for Combatting Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria, they explained.

Positive signs for meat demand

Falling gasoline prices, rising non-farm U.S. employment and the consumer confidence index jumping to its highest level since October 2007 are all positive signs for domestic meat demand.

Domestic demand for meat, particularly for pork, continues to be strong, University of Missouri economists Ron Plain and Scott Brown noted in their weekly hog and cattle outlook.

In September, retail pork demand reached a fresh new high for the year, with the 12-month moving average posting nearly a 5% increase over last year.

Likewise, retail beef demand also has shown some advancement in recent months.

In the "Daily Livestock Report," economists Steve Meyer and Len Steiner noted that U.S. consumer demand for meat and poultry remains at an outstanding level.

Over the past 12 months, the indexes of consumer demand have been positive for pork, beef and chicken, although they have been less favorable for turkey.

Survey shows overwhelming support for humanely raised foods

America loves Thanksgiving - the holiday that celebrates American traditions, family togetherness and gratitude for the unparalleled bounty of our great nation. As Thanksgiving approaches this year, American Humane Association went to Capitol Hill to urge Americans to set a humane table for the holidays and support humane farm practices.

Joined by the CEOs and leaders of major organizations involved in food production, as well as small, medium and large farmers and producers who have committed to raising animals humanely,  one of America's most recognized award-winning top chefs, and some of the nation's foremost animal welfare pioneers, "The Humane Table" congressional briefing celebrated and gave thanks to American farmers and ranchers who not only put food on our families' tables, but who work to put the "heart" in "heartland" by providing food that is safe, abundant, affordable and humanely raised under ethical, commonsense and scientifically demonstrated standards. American Humane Association also released the "2014 Humane Heartland Farm Animal Survey" of nearly 6,000 Americans, showing overwhelming support for humanely raised foods.

Lawsuit filed against Maui biotech ban

Monsanto, Dow AgroSciences along with local individuals, groups and businesses including the Maui Farm Bureau, filed a lawsuit in a federal court in Honolulu to challenge the recently passed referendum that would ban biotech plantings in Maui County, Hawaii.

Voters narrowly approved the moratorium on biotech crop cultivation, with the vote separated by just 1,077 votes.

The suit seeks to delay any enforcement of the measure and ultimately to have it declared unenforceable, Monsanto said in an email statement to Feedstuffs.

"This local referendum interferes with and conflicts with long established state and federal laws that support both the safety and lawful cultivation of GMO plants. For this reason, we believe it is invalid and should never become law. We have full confidence in the merits of our legal claims and that a rational outcome will block the referendum from taking effect," Monsanto spokeswoman Charla Lord said.

ADSA asks "Did you know" about our varied "Member Savings"?

A well-known and frequently used benefit of membership is electronic access to the Journal of Dairy Science (JDS), but membership also provides a variety of other cost saving opportunities.

Meeting Registration - Your professional membership provides savings for all ADSA related meetings you attend. Often the savings from one meeting will more than cover your investment in membership.  Here are a few examples:

Publications - Our best known publication is "the Journal", but ADSA offers a variety of other publications for purchase.  You can check them out by clicking here.  Here are some of your potential savings:

  • ADSA Publications - $15 to $60 per publication
  • S-PAC - $75 for Professional Members

Note: In many cases savings for Graduate and Undergraduate students are even larger.

S-PAC Adds Again

We are pleased to announce the addition of proceedings from the 2014 Mid-South Ruminant Nutrition Conference and the High Plains Dairy Conference to S-PAC.  These additions bring our totals to 504 proceeding from 55 conferences that are available to subscribers. Visit the website http://spac.adsa.org/ for a full list of conferences. If you are not already a subscriber, now is a great time to become one. Not sure, but you'd like to try it? The "5 Days for $5" is a great way to give it a quick try.

Help the animal and dairy science community and attend JAM 2015 for free, too!

Referrals are the most tried-and-true way businesses grow, and the same is true for the Federation of Animal Science Societies (FASS). Do you know a colleague working with an animal science group that is in need of high-quality, cost-effective support services? Help them out by referring them to Jamie Ritter, FASS Executive Director at [email protected]

Help them benefit from the shared resource concept and the 264 years of collective experience the FASS staff have in working with non-profit animal science organizations. If your referral becomes a FASS customer prior to July 1, 2015, ADSA will comp your registration to the 2015 JAM. It's win-win-win. For more information about services offered by FASS, click here.

ADSA is a founding member of FASS.
