Knowledge doesn't erase poor diet

A study of elementary school children in a highly educated community in the Pacific Northwest found that about three-fourths of the students had vitamin D levels that were either insufficient or deficient, and they also lacked adequate intake of other important nutrients.

The findings, reported recently in the Journal of Extension by scientists from the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, make it clear that nutritional deficiencies can be profound even in communities with a very knowledgeable population and easy access to high-quality, affordable food.

Many other studies have found similar concerns in areas with poor food availability and populations with low socioeconomic status and lower levels of education.

This research identified significant nutritional problems in Corvallis, Ore., a university town with many grocery stores, a free bus transit system and some of the highest education levels in the nation. In Corvallis, 26% of residents have completed a graduate degree, which is more than double the national average.

Rapid intensification of Brazilian beef production to persist

In response to rising global beef demand, Brazil is set to step up the rapid intensification of its beef production sector over the next ten years, enabling the industry to expand into higher-value export markets.

According to its latest report "Beefing up in Brazil: Feedlots to Drive Industry Growth," the Rabobank Food & Agribusiness Research (FAR) and Advisory group expects Brazil's feedlot capacity to more than double to 4.5 million head, turning out over 9 million head of fed cattle annually, and increasing fed beef production by approximately 2.5 million tons per year by 2023.

"The opportunities for Brazilian beef producers, feeders, processors and exporters appear very bright," explained Rabobank Analyst Adolfo Fontes. "Expected improvements in productivity and quality in the beef industry will help Brazil increase its presence in high-value export markets such as Europe, Japan and Korea."

Vilsack talks COOL, beef checkoff

Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said that a final World Trade Organization ruling on the United States' mandatory country-of-origin labeling rule could be made public relatively soon within a matter of "weeks, if not days."

Leaked reports previously shared that the ruling would go against the U.S., which if not abided by would allow Canada and Mexico approval to impose sanctions against the United States.

Vilsack said, "My job as secretary is to comply with the Congressional directive so long as it remains the directive of Congress and to assure compliance with whatever decisions may emanate from the WTO."

He said the United States is committed to communicate with Mexicans and Canadians to find a way forward, he said, as he was seated next to his Mexican counterpart Minister of Agriculture Enrique Martinez y Martinez at the World Food Prize Borlaug Dialogues Oct. 16.

Settlements reached in chicken labeling lawsuits

Perdue Farms Inc. and The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) announced the settlement of two federal cases in New Jersey and Florida concerning Perdue's "humanely raised" claim on its Harvestland chicken labels.

The settlement requires the plaintiffs to dismiss their claims with prejudice, in exchange for Perdue agreeing to remove the label claim from its Harvestland chicken packaging.

The proposed class action cases were filed in 2010 and 2013 by individual consumers who contended that the humanely raised claim on the Harvestland chicken packaging was misleading.

Peter Petersan, director of animal protection litigation for HSUS, said, "We are pleased to see the claim removed from Harvestland's packaging, which we view to be misleading. We will continue to work to protect both animals and consumers."

ADSA in the News

Every day, ADSA members are making scientific discoveries and breakthroughs that will affect the dairy industry, our environment, and dairy consumers. Working with Elsevier we seek to raise awareness of some of the work that is likely to be of special interest to consumers through special press releases that highlight the work and provide links to the JDS publications.  Through Elsevier's extensive media contacts we reach hundreds of publications that are outside of normal dairy circles, but who regularly reach millions of consumers.  In almost all cases several of the publications pick up and use the release in whole or in part. Below is a link to the most recent release that is also available in the media area of our website.

"Fermented Milk Made by Lactococcus lactis H61 Improves Skin of Healthy Young Women" (Journal of Dairy Science, Volume 97/Issue 9)

ADSA asks:  Did You Know about S-PAC?

While we now have S-PAC (Searchable Proceedings of Animal Conferences) subscribers in 40 countries, we've found that that some ADSA members may not be aware of one of the significant benefits of membership in ADSA, the opportunity to utilize S-PAC.  Included in your membership dues is access through S-PAC to searchable Joint Annual Meeting abstracts for 1998-2014, ADSA annual meeting abstracts from 1935-1997, as well as ADSA divisional meeting abstracts

and

Members also have the opportunity to subscribe to S-PAC at the deeply discounted ADSA member rate.  Subscriptions run for 365 days from date of sign-up.

Professionals $75; Undergrads $5 and Grads $10

ADSA member rates have been extended to ASAS, PSA and ARPAS members as well as members of other organizations who share their proceedings through S-PAC.

Corporate sustaining member and academic library subscriptions are also available, as S-PAC brings current real world science and its application into the classroom and the office. Speaking of the classroom, S-PAC is the only on-line source for the highly regarded textbook "Large Dairy Herd Management."  This is included in your subscription.

S-PAC is the most comprehensive collection of domestic and international animal production and management conference proceedings in the world. It also includes animal health, dairy foods and grazing conference proceedings. This unique collection of conference proceedings and presentations, that is completely user searchable, is a must-have resource for animal scientists, veterinarians, academicians, consultants and members of industry around the world.  It is a great teaching resource as well since it includes the "Large Dairy Herd Management" text book. As of October 15, 2014, 55 conferences have contributed 498 sets of proceedings, with new conferences and proceedings added frequently.  The value of S-PAC increases every time a conference and a set of proceedings is added. If one can't attend the multitude of conferences that S-PAC covers, S-PAC is the next best thing to being there! Not sure yet, then try S-PAC risk free with our 5 days for $5 offer.  Visit http://spac.adsa.org  for details.

Help the animal and dairy science community and attend JAM 2015 for free, too!

Referrals are the most tried-and-true way businesses grow, and the same is true for the Federation of Animal Science Societies (FASS). Do you know a colleague working with an animal science group that is in need of high-quality, cost-effective support services? Help them out by referring them to Jamie Ritter, FASS Executive Director at [email protected].

Help them benefit from the shared resource concept and the 264 years of collective experience the FASS staff have in working with non-profit animal science organizations. If your referral becomes a FASS customer prior to July 1, 2015, ADSA will comp your registration to the 2015 JAM. It's win-win-win. For more information about services offered by FASS, click here.

ADSA is a founding member of FASS.
