Meat export volumes lower in August but value remains strong

For the second consecutive month, August export value for U.S. beef and pork increased year-over-year despite declines in volume. Export value for both products remains on a record pace, according to statistics released by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF).

August beef exports overcame a 3% decline in volume to 102,456 mt. to set a new monthly value record of $655.2 million - up 16% from a year ago. For January through August, beef exports were up 3% in volume at 790,208 mt. and 13% in value at $4.55 billion compared to the same period last year.

Pork export volume was down 6% year-over-year in August to 162,992 mt. - due in part to market access issues in Russia and the China/Hong Kong region - but export value still achieved a 6% increase to $529.9 million. For the first eight months of the year, pork export volume was up 6% to 1.48 million mt. while value increased 15% to $4.53 billion.

DANMAP: Antimicrobial use increases in animals in Denmark

Antimicrobial use in animals in Denmark continued to increase in 2013 - mainly due to an increased use in pigs.

However, antimicrobial use in pigs is still 12% lower than in 2009. In general, livestock in Denmark received very little of the critically important antimicrobials used in human medicine.

These findings appear in the annual DANMAP report from Statens Serum Institut and the National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark. DANMAP is the Danish integrated antimicrobial resistance monitoring and research program.

In 2013, the total use of antimicrobials in livestock and pets in Denmark was 4% higher than the previous year when measured in kilograms, an announcement said. The increased consumption is mainly attributed to a 6% increase in the consumption of antimicrobials in pig production, which accounts for about 84% of meat production in Denmark. However, the consumption in poultry and pets has also increased, the report notes.

New beef checkoff program proposed by USDA

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack announced creating a new, separate and supplemental beef checkoff program after members of the Beef Checkoff Enhancement Working group had failed to reach a consensus on beef checkoff program reforms.

Over the past three years, the working group has been working on recommendations for the program that satisfy all 11 parties involved.

In a press conference, Forrest Roberts National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) chief executive officer said "This Beef Checkoff Enhancement Working Group has been working together for little over two if not three years in trying to find ways we can make the current checkoff program more effective and more efficient."

Roberts noted over the years the group had brought about several changes to the beef checkoff program.  Two significant areas included making modifications to the contracting authority procedures and joint advisory committee structure.

Consumers want more omega-3s

Consumers want more omega-3sAT least 98% of consumers have now heard of omega-3 fatty acids, and an increasing number are more likely to purchase products containing alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) omega-3s.

This is according to Cargill's "Fatitudes" research, which provides a look at how consumers perceive a variety of oils and fats in packaged goods.

"The 'Fatitudes' research will help our customers better understand opportunities specific to fats and oils," said Kristine Sanschagrin, marketing manager at Cargill Specialty Seeds & Oil. "It provides consumer insights to help develop or reformulate products and grow market share."

ADSA Asks:  Did you Know about Discover Conferences?

ADSA Membership provides many benefits.  Two of the most obvious are the Journal of Dairy Science and the Joint Annual Meeting, but there are others that may be overlooked.  During the coming weeks we will highlight many of the benefits and encourage you to take advantage of all that ADSA has to offer.

Did you know that your membership includes discounted member registration rates to the popular ADSA Discover Conferences?  Attend a single Discover Conference, and you've recovered 45% of your dues!

Graduate students members can attend Discover Conferences at a special low rate, limited to ten on a first-come first-served basis.  In addition, up to ten graduate students per Discover Conference receive up to a $250 travel award, thanks to the Discover Conferences Travel Award Fund, initiated by Bill Baumgardt and supported by ADSA members.  For more information on travel awards, contact Cara Tharp [email protected]  at ADSA headquarters.

In May, Discover will return to Eaglewood Resort and Spa in Itasca, IL, just a short cab ride from O'Hare International Airport.  The 29th Discover Conference, "Amino Acid Requirements of Dairy Cattle "will be held May 26-29, 2015.

The DISCOVER Conferences provide a unique environment and format fostering interactive presentations and discussions with an attempt to involve all conference participants.  If you've never attended a Discover Conference, you need to add this to your professional "bucket list"!  But you will need to act early, as registration is capped to ensure maximum interaction, and this highly-rated meeting sells out.
