VOCAL Whole Health Network (VWHN) Topic #11 - Posted 12.4

The Definition of Spiritual Wellness

http://www.seekingwholeness.com/terms-definitions/the-definition-of-spiritual-wellness

VOCAL Whole Health Network (VWHN) Topic #10 - Posted 11.6

"Can you define 'social wellness/social health'?"

SAMHSA, lists social wellness in their Eight Dimensions of Wellness, as "developing a sense of connection, belonging, and a well-developed support system".

And from wiseGEEK (www.wisegeek.org):

"Social health often deals with how people relate to each other, and how an individual is able to socialize with other people and form relationships. This can deal with friendships, in terms of how well the person can form and keep friendships, and other types of relationships as well. There are a number of ways in which the different aspects of health are interrelated and have an impact on each other.

There is also evidence to indicate that isolation is not only a potential result of mental or physical illness, but may also cause or aggravate such an illness. This is why

social health has become of increasing importance within the greater overall concept of human health and well-being. Many mental and physical health professionals have begun to recognize the importance of social interaction in a person's ability to overcome illness.

The term can also refer to the health of a society, and is often used to indicate how the people within a given society or culture interact and behave toward each other. In this sense, a country that is rife with conflict and violence may be considered to be suffering from social health issues. Just as a person whose body is suffering from cancerous cells destroying healthy cells has a physical health issue, and the jargon of physical or mental health care may be used in reference to society as well".

Webinar: "Reflections on Ferguson: How a Trauma-Informed Lens Can Make a Difference - Posted 12.4

Friday, December 19th, 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.

The shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO and the recent grand jury decision to not indict police officer, Darren Wilson, became a lightning rod for a surging unrest and tension in communities across the country. Responses ranging from peaceful protests to riots are actually reflections of the grief, anger and continuing trauma of those who are outraged by the experiences of racism and discrimination. This is an important time for our movement to consider how we respond. What do we have to offer? Is the trauma-informed lens we use to understand our personal experiences enough to engage such tragedies in our communities? What do trauma-informed communities look like and how might we get started? Join us for a courageous conversation between national peer leaders and offer your questions and perspectives as we discover a way forward together.

Star Center Webinar: "Self-Care is Primary Care" - Posted 12.4

Tuesday, January 27th from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.

Deegan, PhD will flip the notion of primary care and argue that self-care is primary care. Using examples from her own recovery and that of others, she will explain how flipping healthcare in this way defines new roles for individuals, families and staff. New skills and new measureable outcomes will also be described.

Thursday, December 11th from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. with Beckie Child and Casadi ("Khaki") Marino

Disclosure is one of the questions people always ask when considering employment. The Sharing Experience Learned Firsthand (SELF) project gained insight from peers in recovery about the role of lived experience of mental distress and challenges in training and service delivery. Individuals provided their experiences sharing personal history, views on risks and benefits of disclosure, suggestions for colleagues who were considering disclosure, and guidance for organizations wanting to support the effective use of self-disclosure in service provision. Interviews, focus groups, and survey data will be shared during the webinar as well as recommendations for future exploration. Project staff will briefly touch on the impact the project had on their own recovery journeys.
