Free Wellness Wednesday Webinar: "Holding the Hope in Healthcare" with Mary Jadwisiak - Posted 7.1 Wednesday, July 17th from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Holding the Hope In Healthcare explores what happens to our recovery journey when we move into the primary medical care setting. How do we incorporate the SAMHSA Essential Components and Guiding Principles of Recovery into our work in primary health care settings? Participants review the Components and Guiding Principles of Recovery so they can support and increase a medical professional's belief in their patient's ability to recover. This workshop shows participants how to convey hope and inspire recovery and to advocate for and support primary care providers to do the same, without compromising best practices primary care standards. Additionally, participants identify personal attitudes and beliefs they hold that may be barriers to recovery for the peers they support or other people they may encounter. We will also explore how we have the skills we need, as movement and as peer support workers, to recognize and work to change medical beliefs and/or practices dictated by long held cultural beliefs, funding structures or billing requirements that may create unintentional barriers to recovery. We've done this before, we can do this again. Once the beliefs and attitudes are identified, we can work together to find solutions. Participants will leave this webinar with: - Improved non-verbal communication skills for sending messages of hope, respect and recovery; - A new or renewed understanding of the SAMHSA 10 Components of Recovery and Guiding Principles of recovery; - Specific skills for overcoming internal and external barriers to speaking out and reframing medical practices and integrated care policies through the lens of recovery; - A strengthened personal commitment to support recovery practices and policies in the health care settings around them; - Strategies for implementing change in the workplace. New Research Initiative Promotes Service User/Survivor Leadership in the Mental Health Arena - Posted 7.1 The Lived Experience Research Network (LERN) is a new initiative to promote service user/survivor leadership and inclusion in behavioral health and disabilities research, clinical practice, and program evaluation. LERN advocates for increased accessibility in research and evaluation settings, social justice, and policy change, and aims to strengthen ties among stakeholders. A working group within LERN is currently engaged in systems advocacy to address pervasive discrimination, stigma, and civil rights violations within higher education settings, with a focus on graduate students. The LERN Discrimination in Higher Ed (DHE) working group has created a survey designed to gather information about students' experiences of discrimination, accommodation denials, and other disability-related barriers in postsecondary settings. The researchers write, "We encourage both undergraduates and graduate students to participate. Please note that the survey is not formal research but rather information-gathering for the purpose of advocacy; no private information will be collected." To participate, click here. Challenge.gov: Develop a Suicide Prevention App - Posted 6.13
The "Continuity of Care and Follow-Up App Challenge" challenges individuals and organizations with the development of an application (app) for a mobile handheld device. The app will provide linkages to continuity of care and follow-up care for a person at risk for suicide who was discharged from an inpatient unit or emergency department. Proposed activities can include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Live chatting via the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline website
- Safety planning
- SMS (short message service) functionality
- Scheduling functionality and appointment reminders
- Mapping/transportation functionality that shows locations of health care resources.
Innovation is highly encouraged. At a minimum, entrants must include safety planning and utilize two resources to provide users with access to services through the crisis centers within the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the SAMHSA Treatment Locator. The top three entrants will be eligible for a total of $100,000. Please be aware there is a 2-month deadline.
Note: SAMHSA is not looking for an application that simply connects a user to a crisis line via a single button; that functionality is found in a number of other suicide prevention applications.
