SAMHSA: Promote Mental and Physical Wellness in 2013 - Posted 4.22

Through its Wellness Initiative, SAMHSA pledges to promote wellness for people with mental and substance use disorders by motivating individuals, organizations, and communities to take action and work toward improved quality of life, cardiovascular health, and decreased early mortality rates.

Wellness includes many dimensions of health: physical, emotional, financial, social, occupational, intellectual, environmental, and spiritual. SAMHSA's Wellness Initiative aims to inspire individuals to improve one physical health behavior and explore their talents, skills, interests, social connections, and environment to incorporate other dimensions of wellness.

SAMHSA's Wellness Initiative Webinar (Training Teleconference), "Springing Into Wellness and Planting the Financial Wellness Seed" - Posted 4.22

Tuesday, April 30th from 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

For many people, spring means a time for renewed growth and balance in many areas of life. The Wellness Initiative is excited to help you, your loved ones, and your communities spring into wellness.

To promote recovery and social inclusion, SAMHSA's Wellness Initiative promotes embracing the Eight Dimensions of Wellness to achieve a holistic overall well-being. These dimensions include the social, emotional, physical, occupational, intellectual, spiritual, environmental, and financial aspects of a person's life. Wellness is not the absence of disease, illness, and stress, but the presence of purpose in life, active involvement in satisfying work and play, joyful relationships, a healthy body and living environment, and happiness.

This year, the Wellness Initiative is focusing on the financial dimension of wellness. Approximately 60 to 80 percent of people with mental illness are unemployed. For individuals with severe mental illness, this number can rise to approximately 90 percent. Along with the advantages that come with having an income, employment can also provide an enormous positive impact on an individual's recovery, through social and emotional benefits.

However, financial wellness is not just about employment. It is also an intricate balance of the mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of managing, investing, and conserving one's financial resources and interests. Barriers to financial wellness and employment are challenging for anyone, but can prove especially difficult for people with mental and substance use disorders.

VOCAL Announces  Conference Keynote Speaker, Joseph Rogers!

Joseph Rogers is Chief Advocacy Officer of the Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania (MHASP), and found

er and Executive Director of the National Mental Health Consumers' Self-Help Clearinghouse, a consumer-run national technical assistance center funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Mental Health Services.

In 1984, Joseph Rogers created Project SHARE (Self-Help and Advocacy Resource Exchange), a peer-support and advocacy organization, under MHASP's auspices. As a result of Rogers' vision and leadership, Project SHARE grew until it was blended with MHASP, which Rogers had built from a small regional mental health advocacy agency into one of the largest mental health associations in the country, including an array of peer-run programs serving local, statewide, and national constituencies. From 1997 to 2007, Rogers served as President and CEO of MHASP.

A national leader of the mental health consumer movement, Joseph Rogers has testified before U.S. Senate committees and has consulted in more than 30 states, as well as nationally and internationally, on behavioral health policy issues. He has chaired and/or served on numerous boards and committees, such as the Executive Committee of the President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, and the Congressionally appointed Task Force on the Rights and Empowerment of People with Disabilities, which helped pass the Americans with Disabilities Act. He was a key player in the closing of Philadelphia State Hospital and in the successful struggle to get the dollars to follow the patients into the community, to establish what has become a model system of community-based services, including peer-run services.

Rogers has appeared on numerous radio and TV shows to publicize the self-help/advocacy movement and fight prejudice and discrimination.

His many awards include the Heinz Award for the Human Condition (2005), the Outstanding Non-Psychiatrist Award of the American Association of Community Psychiatrists (2002), and the Timothy Coakley Behavioral Health Leadership Award of the American College of Mental Health Administration (2009), for his leadership in transforming mental health care in this country.
