Webinar: "Peers as Partners: How England's 'Recovery Colleges' Are Changing the Culture" *****************************************************************************
Tuesday, January 22nd
2:00-3:30 p.m.
The Department of Health in England has launched a national initiative to help local mental health services become more supportive of recovery. The initiative is based on the combined expertise of professionals and people with lived experience of mental health problems. It offers consulting services and idea-sharing opportunities to institute the organizational change required to steer away from staff-led mental health services to services 'co-produced' by a full partnership between the people running the services and the people receiving them. The webinar explores strategies that have worked in this groundbreaking initiative such as the establishment of local 'Recovery Colleges,' the introduction of peers into the workforce, and changing risk assessment and management procedures. This webinar is part of the Behavioral Health World Series brought to you by the National Council and the International Initiative for Mental Health Leadership. Webinar: "WHAM: Eight Weeks to Whole Health Through Peer Support Groups" ***********************************************************************
Tuesday, January 15th 2:00-3:30 p.m.
The National Council for Behavioral Health offers 2-day in-person trainings in WHAM - Whole Health Action Management - a new science-based program that teaches participants to set and achieve whole health goals through weekly action plans and 8-week support groups. Given the high incidence of chronic physical health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity among people with mental illnesses and addictions, WHAM was developed by peers for peers to help them improve chronic health and behavioral health conditions. The training is based on the WHAM curriculum developed by the SAMHSA-HRSA Center for Integrated Health Solutions (run by the National Council).WHAM training supports the peer workforce to use person-centered planning and weekly action plans to create new health behavior by engaging in weekly WHAM groups. It also teaches basic health screens for prevention and encourages shared decision making with health professionals. Join this webinar to learn all about WHAM, the 10 science-based whole health and resiliency factors the program is built on, and how you can bring a WHAM peer training to your organization or region. January 24th from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. This is the second in a series of free webinars discussing the roles of Peer Specialists in today's mental health systems. January's webinar - sponsored by the Temple University Collaborative on Community Inclusion of Individuals with Psychiatric Disabilities and the National Mental Health Consumers' Self-Help Clearinghouse - focuses on the role of Peer Specialists in promoting community inclusion in rural America. The four-part free webinar series - jointly funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) - is designed to provide a national platform for the discussion of roles that peer specialists and peer-run programs can play in offering the supports and services that individuals may need to participate more fully in the day-to-day lives of their communities. This second webinar will focus on the special challenges facing peer specialists in rural America. The webinar, to be presented by Richard Baron, Director of Knowledge Translation at the Temple University Collaborative, and will draw on a national study of rural peer specialists completed a little more than a year ago.
