************************************** "VOCAL's Statement on Media Reports..." **************************************
VOCAL, Virginia's organization of mental health self-advocates stands with ASAN, the Autistic Self Advocacy Network in responding to the media reports regarding the shooting at Sandy Hook elementary. It has been reported that Adam Lanza may have a mental health and/or autism spectrum diagnosis.
With heavy hearts, our thoughts go out to the victims of Friday's shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, and their friends and families. We encourage using any and all resources necessary to assist the victims' recovery in both the short and long-term. Recent media reports have suggested that the perpetrator of this violence, Adam Lanza, may have been diagnosed with a psychiatric disability or with Asperger's Syndrome, a diagnosis on the autism spectrum. In either event, it is imperative that as we mourn the victims of this horrific tragedy, that we all avoid drawing inappropriate and unfounded links between psychiatric illnesses, autism or other disabilities and violence. Individuals with mental illness and autistic Americans are no more likely to commit violent crime than people without disabilities. In fact, people with disabilities of all kinds, including mental illness and autism, are more likely to be the victims of violent crime than the perpetrators. Should the shooter in Friday's tragedy prove to have been diagnosed with a psychiatric illness or on the autism spectrum, the millions of Americans with disabilities should be no more implicated in his actions Friday than the non-disabled population is responsible for the violent acts of those without disabilities.
Friday's violence was the act of an individual. We urge media, government and community leaders to speak out against any effort to spuriously link the mental health or autistic community with violent crime. Americans with disabilities persist in facing discrimination and segregation in school, the workplace and the community. In this terrible time, our society should not further stigmatize the disability community. As our great nation has so many times in the past, let us come together both to mourn those killed by these acts of heinous murder and defend all parts of our country from the scourge of stigma and prejudice.

Fire Stories: Further Thoughts on Radically Rethinking Mental Illness
***********************************************************
At last, the book is complete! Click HERE to buy the book today. Our work has always been about putting a human face on something potentially scary and unknown. Fire Stories is a small but powerful book that encompasses so much of what we wanted to say about mental health, crisis, spirituality, and how we see ourselves in the world. Firestories: Further Thoughts on Radically Rethinking Mental Illness is a collection of 12 narratives that reveal the chaotic and often deeply spiritual experiences of those who have encountered states of mind often labeled as mental illness. These vivid accounts describe emotional turbulence, hidden blessings, mad gifts, ecstatic visions, altered states, spiritual breakthroughs and visionary meltdowns. A follow-up to Firewalkers: Madness, Mystery and Beauty, Fire Stories explores our complicated relationship with reality and the various ways we attempt to resolve the brilliant colors of perception and imagination with a society that is often far more black and white. Editors: Beth Gager, Yolande Long, Malaina Poore and Cynthia Power Authors: Lara Abramov, Beth Gager, Khadijah Kysia, Seth Leornard, Paul Millenski, Jason Mintel, Kara Nichols, Malaina Poore, Christopher Reynolds, Paul Sohar, Jane St. Clair and Colleen Wells

For ease of review, the paper is divided into three sections:
- Definition of Trauma

************************************************ "Ethics and Peer Support Services in Virginia" Training ************************************************ Tuesday, February 19th from 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., in Lynchburg Cost: $115.00 /pp Mental health and substance addiction peer support services are offered in a variety of settings in the Commonwealth of Virginia including community services boards, behavioral health authorities, clubhouses, hospitals, correctional facilities, peer-run centers and more. They are a necessity if Virginia providers are to offer top quality services to individuals experiencing mental health and/or substance-addiction challenges. The profession of peer support is a fairly new discipline, which, like all professions, comes with a unique set of challenges. One of the greatest challenges for individuals in this specialized field is facing difficult ethical issues. Join Recovery Resources and Support (RRS) for a training on ethics in the workplace for peer support service providers. Heather Seaman, MBA, founder of RRS, has coordinated two peer support specialist core curriculum trainings based on a model developed by the Appalachian Consulting Group (the "Georgia Model"), assisted nearly 250 individuals in completing Mental Health Recovery including Wellness Recovery Action Planning® (WRAP®) workshops or in becoming facilitators, and is also the founding President and current Treasurer of Friends 4 Recovery Whole Health Center, an organization operated by and for individuals in recovery in Chesterfield County established in 2009.Discussion on case studies will be facilitated by Dr. Michael Gillette, a Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and President of Bioethical Services of Virginia, Inc., a medical ethics consulting business. Dr. Gillette provides a unique perspective on the subject and will assist attendees with sorting out some of the most common issues arising in the workplace as individuals in recovery transition from recipients to providers of services.
