News from the Southwest Virginia Regional Consumer
Empowerment and Recovery Council

************************************************

We, the SWVA RCERC, share common goals and interests, are committed to giving back, and speak with a united voice that is empowered, assertive and coordinated. We must tell our stories and work to identify and achieve goals that instill hope, protect the rights of others, and advocate for our fellow consumers.

We celebrate our recovery by sharing our stories not only within our groups but with schools, colleges, churches and organizations. We have much to offer to consumers and their families, or the general public by Mental Health interactive events and programs. Consumer training includes Wellness Recovery Action Plan, Leadership, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), and Mental Health Awareness Day. Currently we are creating workshops that can be shared in Southwest Virginia .

We meet every third Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the Hungry Mother Park Restaurant , located at 2854 Park Blvd., Marion, 24319. Lunch is included and reservations must made by the second Wednesday to Judy Salyer 276.479.2800 or emailing jsalyer@mounet.com.

Personalized Mental Healthcare: How Consumers Can Drive Better Outcomes
**********************************************************************

Monday, October 22nd, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.

Behavioral health has been talking about "person-centered planning" for over a quarter of a century yet few practitioners and organizations have been able to fully operationalize this concept. But can our forays point the way toward a future driven by personalized medicine? Can care for persons with mental illness really be individualized, negotiable, flexible, and self-directed - right down to allowing consumers to plan their care within a budget? Hear about behavioral health organizations around the world that have successfully implemented individualized care and overcome myriad leadership, bureaucratic, administrative, financial, attitudinal, competency, and staffing challenges along the way. Discover how you can transform your organization to offer personalization that yields better outcomes for consumers.

Rappahannock Area Community Services Board to Host Public
Hearing on Comprehensive Plan
********************************************************

November 5th at 4:00 p.m.

The Rappahannock Area Community Services Board (RACSB) is requesting community feedback on the draft 2012 - 2018 Comprehensive Plan. A public hearing will be held Monday, November 5, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. at the Ronald W. Branscome Building, 600 Jackson Street, Fredericksburg. Every two years, the RACSB reviews and updates its local six-year plan for mental health, intellectual disability, substance use disorder, early intervention, and prevention services. To view the draft Comprehensive Plan, please visit www.racsb.state.va.us.
Community Services Boards are recognized as the single points of entry into publicly funded mental health, intellectual disability, and substance abuse services, with responsibility and authority for assessing individual needs, accessing a comprehensive array of services and supports, and managing state-controlled funds for community-based services. There are 39 Community Services Boards and one Behavioral Health Authority in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The local comprehensive plan identifies services and supports required to meet the projected needs of persons with mental illnesses, intellectual disability, alcohol or other drug dependence or abuse problems and the prevention of future occurrences in the City of Fredericksburg, and the surrounding Counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania, and Stafford. The needs are reflective of input provided by individuals receiving services, family members, community members, other service providers, and state reports and studies.
