Dear Friends,
Ready to Advocate?
I hope so. Our State Lobby Day is fast approaching. It is Thursday, February 9. Visit our website to register. With this being the budget session for the Virginia General Assembly, I am sure things will get very interesting. And, remember, our efforts don't stop with Lobby Day. We are already hard at work and may need your support again during this session.
Mark Tuesday, May 8 on your calendars NOW as it's our National Lobby Day. The NBCC Advocacy Summit is May 5 - 7 where Deadline 2020 will be the theme. Early Bird Registration deadline is Friday, February 10. Remember, we do offer sponsorships for this conference.
If you have any questions on our advocacy efforts, please contact Vernal Branch at vernal@vbcf.org or 804-285-1200.
I look forward to working with all of you during 2012 as we make the eradication of breast cancer a real priority.

Back in Session | |
The Virginia General Assembly is back in session this week. You can count on VBCF to monitor and inform you of any breast cancer legislation that may pop up during the session.
Right now, we are watching House Bill 83 which aims to offer extra protection for women with dense breasts:
7. Establish guidelines to require the licensed facilities or physicians' offices where mammography services are performed to offer to the patient, prior to departure, development of such films to ensure integrity and quality of the film. When film developing is not available or the patient chooses not to wait, the patient shall be notified within two business days if another mammogram is necessary. This requirement does not imply or require that a diagnostic opinion be made at the time of the mammogram. The interpreting physician may require that the mammogram be retaken if, in the opinion of the physician, the study is of inadequate quality. The guidelines shall also require all mammogram reports to include information on breast density. Such information shall inform patients with dense breast tissue, as determined by the physician, that supplementary screening tests may be beneficial, depending on individual risk factors.
Full text of the bill can be read here. |
