Our Mission:
The Farm of Peace/Shadhiliyya Sufi Center East is a spiritual community dedicated to bringing God's Peace, Love, Mercy, Justice and Freedom to all of creation. We seek to bring peace and healing to individuals and the world by putting into practice the Love at the core of all religions.
Dear Friends,
Fall is upon us, and outdoor Farm activities are winding down. Even though winter is sending its cold breath down our necks, it's not too soon to sign up for next year's CSA garden or reserve a lamb for next fall!
Our Thanksgiving potluck is tomorrow and we hope to see many of you there. It's also time for our annual fundraising appeal - you should see a letter in your mailbox soon. Our efforts depend on the generosity of supporters like you.
We held our first Eid al-Adtha gathering last month (we usually only celebrate Eid al-Fitr) and welcomed new friends to help with the sacrifice and stay for an afternoon.
Winter is a time to turn inward, take time to rest and refresh. What gift can you give yourself for the new year? If you can't make it to our New Year's zawiya at the end of the month, we have many exciting workshops on the schedule in January, February and onwards. And don't miss the free introductory preview of the Living Peace series in Frederick on Nov. 27.
Last but not least, we welcome two new staff members to the farm.
With peace and blessings,
Rifqa Renata Parrino (editor)
Community Celebrates Eid al-Adha
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
During our first public Eid al-Adha celebration at the Farm, the community gathered for a khutba and brunch potluck. Afterwards, Imam Jamil Bastress sacrificed 6 lambs for various community members and guests. We welcomed several families new to the Farm who came especially to sacrifice a lamb. The lambs were sacrificed in the halal manner with help from some of the guests who wished to participate. Visitors appreciated the individual and gentle handling of the lambs and the holy atmosphere in which they are held during the sacrifice. Afterwards several families came to the IPC, bringing bountiful Pakistani dishes and cooking some of the fresh lamb (with fiery spices!) to share with all who were present. We feel blessed to have made new friends from the Baltimore area. Portions of the lambs were donated to the needy including several women's shelters. Alhamdulillah!
Writing Teacher Wins Award
Welcome ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Welcome to our newest staff members! Raja Jennifer Kropf and Cindy Pratt. You may hear Raja's voice on the phone when you call - she is our new Office Manager. Raja comes to us from Florida, where she has helped facilitate the last several Florida Sufi Schools in addition to helping run her family's construction business. Raja loves espresso and her new blue lamp, Pierre. She is "humbled and grateful" to have the chance to serve at the Farm.
Cindy Pratt
The Children's School at the Farm is excited to have a dynamic, creative and experienced new principal teacher this year. Cindy Pratt holds the hearts of the children across elementary and middle school grades and fosters their curiosity and skills in a student-centered learning environment that integrates beautifully with the mission of the Farm.
What does it mean to be like wool in the hands of God?
"The Farm of Peace offered a beautiful, holy container, giving me a completely safe, nourishing environment in which to face and address some deep, old patterns of behavior, and opened me to receive many benefits from Allah." ~GH
"There are so many reasons to come to the Farm, and one of the top three is the meals. The first is the program, but also the building, which is so containing and full of peace, along with the holding and care from all the staff. Thank you!" ~ RM
"The love expressed and the safety created made it possible to be vulnerable and go more deeply. Learning more about the Sufi way and practices has been very interesting." ~ Anon.
Farming Season Winds Down
by Halima Willett
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Farming offers an innate connection with the qualities of each season, along with the healing benefits as we eat in harmony with them as well. I feel much gratitude for the fruits of our labor, now that the season of rest is upon us. Our last CSA delivery was in early November. There are many tasks still at hand -- garlic planting is underway and construction of the high tunnel is ongoing -- but the busy season has slowed to a more steady pace.
Lee, a local CSA work-share member, with an armful of rutabagas.
We plan to remain a 60 member CSA next year. As we are not increasing the number of shares offered next year, we anticipate filling up, insha'Allah, so please let us know if you'd like us to reserve your share.
This year's focus was on nurturing the foundation of the CSA: amending the soil, improving fencing, establishing more permanent beds and seeking to maximize use of our current 3 acres. Three covered "tunnels" were added this year, and lettuce and other crops we started under the tunnel were just beautiful. The tunnels will support earlier growth in the spring, so next year we'll focus on making full use of the additional tunnels for season extension, such as starting cucumbers extra early.
We continue to experiment with plant varieties, seeking for those that thrive at the Farm, and clever new ways to foil insects without pesticides ... It is always a work in progress, in exploration and growth... a dance with the Creator. I am recalling my asparagus epiphany from early this spring. The asparagus was a three year wait. Picking the asparagus too soon prevents the establishment of a strong root system and reduces the gift of future harvests. How many deep lessons there are to be learned by listening to the world around us speak. Our Creator is always sending the gifts of His beautiful qualities to speak to us through this magnificent creation, when we open our eyes and our hearts to witness them. As we transition into the next cycle, we send gratitude to our Creator for the abundant gifts we have received this season. Our hands certainly do not hold the power to create a fruit, but through His majesty and power, we are able to witness nourishment unfold from a tiny seed, bearing fruit to feed many. As those seeds are planted into the earth that was placed under our feet, the light of the sun reaches them and the rain falls in generous drops of sheer beauty. All of this unfolds by the grace of God. I am continuously in awe of this Creation, and how kind and loving our Lord is. We thank the Source of all life, for all the beauty and nourishment we have received unfolding in multiples and pray we can continue to serve in stewarding the sharing of His bountiful harvest, insha'Allah.
In addition to the garden, our livestock continue to provide nourishment for beloveds. We raised 26 lambs for meat this year. Our 14 breeding ewes are currently in pasture with the ram, Rastus, as they work together to expand our flock for the coming year. A few hundred broiler chickens were raised in moveable pens around the perimeter of the CSA gardens this year. They were moved 2-3 times a day, allowing them access to fresh forage along with their locally grown organic feed. The meat they produced was delicious and well sought after.
We discovered there is no shortage of requests for halal meat raised on the pastures at the Farm of Peace. I must admit, I felt like I had to keep it a secret that we had such meat available, as they sold out rather quickly with each batch! We hope to have such offerings next year to make healthy, local nourishment available to all who want it.
Allah Responds to Our Prayers
by Rifqa Parrino
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last spring I attended a visioning workshop held by local Sufi teacher Halima Reilly. One of the things we did was make a "vision board" collage, (a.k.a. "a prayer in pictures"). We cut pictures out of magazines - anything that appealed - and then glued them onto a big white paperboard. I found myself gathering images mostly of plants and homey things - a garden shed in bright colors, flower gardens, a living room. I reflected on how long it had been since I'd had a place of my own -- 8 years at the Farm living in shared space or just a room, now in a friend's home.
On impulse I put a simple little floor plan of a cabin, from a brochure I'd kept for the day when I could afford my own home again (which I thought would be never). I put the 2-bedroom, 1-bath floor plan on my poster with the words, "This or better, inshallah (if it's the will of God)." I put it on my wall and thought no more about it. I took a long trip to visit my family in April and June, and when I came back, the first thing I saw driving to the Farm was a For-Sale sign on a house I'd never noticed before. I called the agent and things moved quickly -- money I'd had locked up quickly became available, my father made a substantial gift, there were no other offers. The bank refused to respond to my loan application, so I looked at other avenues. On August 23, I became the owner of a 3-bedroom 2-bath fixer-upper manufactured home on a 1-acre lot, only a mile away from Haven Lane. I like to say "Allah is the Chess Master," because He knows far ahead what piece needs to move where: I sold a townhome in 2004 and moved to the Farm, invested some of that money on impulse, which I could not get back until suddenly this other property was available, about as close to the Farm as you can get, in an area where there are very few single-family homes on small lots on the market. And by the grace of Allah, I got for cash, mortgage free! (That's not quite the end .... it is a fixer-upper. But that's another story.)
A Winner from our Kitchen
Millet, Tempeh and Sweet Potato Patties
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This yummy recipe is adapted from Delicious Living magazine. Our guests love these patties, and most of them agree the best part is the curry mayo! Serves 4-6 1/2 cup uncooked millet, rinsed 1/2 medium sweet potato, chopped (about 1-1/2 cups) 1-1/2 cups water or vegetable broth 1 TBSP toasted sesame oil 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms (optional, fine without them) 4 oz tempeh, crumbled 1 small bunch scallions, thinly sliced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 TBSP tamari (low-sodium and/or wheat-free as desired) 2 TBSP mirin or rice vinegar Vegetable oil, if frying Chopped cilantro or parsley for garnish (optional) Spicy mayonnaise or mango chutney
1. Combine millet, sweet potato and broth in a medium pot. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and cook on medium until millet is tender and broth is absorbed, about 25 minutes. Turn off heat and let stand 5 minutes.
2. Meanwhile, heat sesame oil in a large skillet; saute mushrooms, tempeh, scallions and garlic for 6-7 minutes or until tempeh is browned. Stir in tamari and mirin, cook for 2 minutes more until liquid is gone, scraping up browned bits. If frying, transfer mixture to a bowl and wipe out the skillet.
3. When millet mixture is done, mash with a potato masher until well combined with sweet potatoes. Stir in tempeh mixture until creamy and thick. Season with salt and pepper. When cool enough to handle but still warm, quickly form into patties.
4. If frying: Heat vegetable oil in skillet over medium heat, cook patties until lightly browned, about 3 minutes per side. If baking: Arrange on a non-stick or oiled baking sheet, spray tops with vegetable oil, and bake at 375 until lightly browned - no need to flip.
5. Serve with one or more of the following: ketchup, mango chutney, spicy mayo (2 tsp Sriracha sauce with 1/4 c mayo) or curry mayo (stir 1 tsp curry powder into 1/2 cup mayo).
Your service makes a difference

Thank you to all who give their time and talents in service at the Farm of Peace. Fatima Horne comes to help clean the IPC and vauum the mosque nearly every week; Joshua Salaam and William Pfleger helped with our halal lamb slaughter; Amin Whalen has been lending a hand with the ongoing care of the sheep and helped our regular workshare crew in the CSA garden many times during the season. Jamil Bastress serves as our imam (on a volunteer basis), holds jumah weekly, supervises our halal slaughter, and is now the primary caretaker of our sheep. We also thank anyone else who has helped out and we've neglected to mention. We are very appreciative for the generosity of all those who have given their time and resources to support the Farm of Peace. Thank you!
