Fort Bend ISD hosts Decision Day event to celebrate post-secondary commitments of graduating seniors from all 11 high schools
 
If we could choose one word to describe Fort Bend ISD's 2016 graduating seniors, it would be AWESOME! More than 5,547 seniors, from all 11 FBISD high schools, have been accepted and made the decision to attend college, a technical or trade school or join the U.S. military.

In his weekly messages to the community, Dr. Dupre addresses safe places for our students, school finance and our budget, construction contracts, new executive leaders and straight talk. He also gives a special thanks to our Board for their consistent leadership in serving the FBISD community.
 
Board, Building and Budget
This week has been a particularly busy one within Fort Bend ISD as everyone is preparing for the end-of-year activities, and on Monday, May 16, three separate board meetings were held. I want to share with you some news stemming from those meetings, as well as a few other information items regarding school finance, straight talk on forgery cases, and new leaders in our District.

While much of the past week's news was about broader issues and the challenges we face in public education, we are rapidly approaching the end of the school year and will soon be recognizing the FBISD Class of 2016.


Board members Jim Rice and Dave Rosenthal sworn in to serve another three-year term
The Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees canvassed and certified the unofficial results of the May 7, 2016 election during a Special Board meeting on Monday, May 16.  On May 7, voters re-elected Jim Rice and Dave Rosenthal.
Mark Foust named Fort Bend ISD Chief of Schools 
Dr. Mark Foust was named Chief of Schools at Fort Bend ISD's May 16 Regular Board meeting. As Chief of Schools, Dr. Foust will be responsible for oversight of school administration for the District's 75 campuses, and more.

Diana Sayavedra named FBISD Chief of Instructional Support and Student Services
Diana Sayavedra was named Chief of Instructional Support and Student Services at Fort Bend ISD's May 16 Regular Board meeting. She is currently Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction in Pflugerville ISD. 
District administrators appointed to new positions during May 16 Board meeting
The Board of Trustees approved District administrators to represent various divisions in the school district, during recent Board meetings. Dr. Alice Ledford is Director of HR Leadership Experience; Kristi Durham is Director of Elementary Curriculum; Mitzi Patin is Executive Director of Information Systems; Amanda Bubela is Director of External Communications and Media Relations; and Pamela Shaw is Director of Parent and Community Engagement.
FBISD Board approves new elementary school principals at recent board meeting
During the May 16 Regular Board Meeting, the Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees approved new school leaders at three elementary schools. Alena McClanahan is the new principal at Lakeview Elementary School. Sonya Smith-Watson is the principal at Cornerstone Elementary School; and Constance Hawkins is the assistant principal for the EDGE Program at Briargate Elementary School.
June Board of Trustees Meeting
The scheduled June 2016 FBISD Board of Trustees meetings will be held on the following dates:
  • June 6 - Public Budget Hearing, 5:30 p.m.
  • June 6 - Called Meeting and Agenda Review Workshop, 6:00 p.m.
  • June 20 - Regular Board Meeting, 6:00 p.m.

School Finance Case Update: Texas Supreme Court finds system constitutional 
The Texas Supreme Court recently ruled in the school finance case. In short, it appears the Supreme Court has overruled Judge Dietz on all of the plaintiff school district claims in finding the system constitutional, but "undeniably imperfect, with immense room for improvement,"  according to the Court's opinion. Therefore, at this point, the District will plan to work within the current funding framework and continue to compel our elected officials to make the much needed improvements to the system.

Sugar Land Middle School students spread safety messages; win awards in Teens in the Driver Seat contest
Sugar Land Middle School students helped spread positive messages about driver safety by participating in the Teens in the Driver Seat contest. The contest invites students to educate others about the dangers of teen driving
Quail Valley Elementary School students demonstrate ability to "Learn-Serve-Lead" at Global Leadership Event
A sense of pride and honor was felt throughout the hallways of Quail Valley Elementary School as students demonstrated leadership in action before an audience of District administrators, parents and community members. The school hosted a Global Leadership Night that welcomed guests to observe the overall positive attitude and commitment to learning that is taking place on campus.
Fort Bend Falcons take on staff at basketball game
The Fort Bend Falcons Special Olympics basketball team played against Fort Bend ISD Special Education teachers and staff in an exhibition game at Lake Olympia Middle School.
Hunters Glen Elementary honors reading club members
To celebrate students' love of reading while promoting literacy, Hunters Glen Elementary teachers and administrators honored student participants of the Texas Readers' Club at a recent luncheon program on campus.
